Vision (2016)
Vision, having saved the world 37 times (they counted), has decided to start a family. So he builds a wife, and they build two children together, and move into a house in Virginia. Several people will die because of this.
Tom King is a controversial writer, Heroes in Crisis as the greatest example, but at his best he can add a great deal of emotional depth to characters that have not received it before. Here this depth is applied to Vision, who for so long was noted as the truth-telling beacon of justice, and becomes a normal man, someone who loves his family a little too much and a little too little.
I will also note that people often don't get a sense for how robots behave, so the traits they are imbued with as characters come across as autistic. This is a neutral action; it can be terrible, but often these characters come across sympathetic (Wall-E is a particularly positive example). Vision's anger and joy come across as traits I see in myself as well, and I recognize rather than reject the things he does, up to and including his flaws. The other three members of his family each have their own positive qualities, but they also have a note of obsession about them that starts driving them crazy. Vin and Viv are the most sympathetic of the bunch, and what happens to each of them individually is heart-rending.
I don't think it's quite as good as the first time I read it the first time around. One of the big things about this book is the shock factor of the events that crop up, but on second read it would have to be the events themselves and how they stand up to scrutiny. Everything seems to have good connective tissue from beginning to end, although there are some cracks and weakened plotting. The way Victor is portrayed in this book might grind some gears for fans of The Runaways. Also there is a lore addition about vibranium that was not mentioned before and has not been used since. And most notably for me, issue number 10 doesn't hit quite as hard as it did the first time around. This observation I was the most saddened by (though it does show grief and building rage exceptionally well) as I remember that being a highlight when I first read this book. There's a slight disconnect with the emotions of this book, and whether or not that's intentional to get in these robots' heads is unclear.
I don't know if I would call it great like I would when I first read it in 2016, but I think it's good, and the tragedy happening to characters that are like me makes it hit hard, just my flavor of devastating. I think I need to think a little more about it to determine if it really holds up, but I would recommend it even so.

Lady Layton has so far been given a Spring 2017 release date in Japan and as such there’s no info on a possible Western release later down the line. The game will be available on 3DS as well as mobile devices via iOS & Android.
