Generation on a Tightrope (Chapter 3)
As we read each chapter, I am loving this book more and more. This chapter identifies some areas that are different now in our generation, than they were in our parents' generation. I think it is important to remember that everyone needs to be adaptable and understandable. The adults considered "immigrants" need to be adaptable to the changing and increasing usages of technology in higher education and daily life. However, at the same time, we as "natives" need to have a sense of understanding that people are trying to adjust to our lifestyle and how we communicate.
I think an interesting point was brought up by a student who was interviewed. He/she stated that we have so much going on with our social media accounts because we want to supplement not substitute our face-to-face conversations that we have. So many times do I hear people say that we are no longer in want of having face-to-face conversations and we would rather just have all our friends online. I disagree. I think we are in a time and place that we want to know what is going with our friends at all moments of the day - whether that be through status updates, tweets, snapchat videos, or Instagram photos. Our generation has a fear of missing out. We don't want anything to happen that we don't know about. We are impatient with finding things out and rely heavily on instant gratification and communication sources.
