We’ve all been there. A system starts out as some form of development or test platform. The application administrator tells us that they will let us know when it is production and would need to be backed up. Then the system mysteriously graduates silently into production. And then, of course, a failure occurs and the system is not backed up.

As a system administrator, this would drive me crazy, especially in a realm that limited the number of backup agents I could install on systems. Virtualization, and more specifically, Veeam Backup & Replication, can help eliminate this problem!

For a company that has been fully supported by VMware, this is a huge step forward. Microsoft and VMware have been at it for a long time and as of late Microsoft has been gaining market share.

Symantec Backup Exec promises… What do you really need from your backup solution? All I am looking for is the best way to protect my data and the quickest way to restore it when I need it. Symantec Backup Exec 2010 promises a lot. According to the Symantec website, Backup Exec was the first to introduce granular recovery for virtual applications with its Granular Recovery Technology (GRT). This sounds great when all you need to recover is a file and not the whole virtual machine. Some of the other key features include:

Integrated and adaptable deduplication

Unified archiving

Support for VMware vSphere 4.0, vStorage API, Windows Server 2008 R2, and Microsoft Hyper-V R2
