So, Indonesia has finally stop practicing virginity test for women when applying to join the army.
I am so happy. Finally, finally. A step. A meaningful step.
And the foreign news just covered that.
And then I made the mistake of scrolling down the comments.
It just hurt so much when instead of celebrating the news with us, the comments were condescending and mocking us even further, for our progress.
Our country is still young. We have not healed completely from the hundreds of years of colonialism and slavery, and then decades of dictatorships. We weren't allowed to shout our voices. We weren't allowed to progress like your almighty-can-never-be-wrong country did. And now we're being ridiculed for taking steps forward.
And I know this is not just about my country.
Every single time a developing country, a healing country, especially non-western country progress through something that seems outdated, old-fashioned, or even considered as 'barbaric' , these types of comments always comes.
Welcome to 2021!
Really? In this century?
Can't believe these things still exists.
Those words, to me, feels like erasing years of struggles that our people faced. We were not lazing around in those years. We were, literally, trying to stay alive.
Just imagine it like this:
You are a kid who is trying to ride a bicycle for the first time, in a track field full of professional cycling athletes.
Being a newbie, you fell. But it didn't stop you. You get back up again, and again. You tried to catch up with the others, but you keep falling. And some of the others are trying to keep you falling, over and over again. Preventing you to catch up. Preventing you to move forward.
And then, when you finally, finally, succeed on not falling, instead of congratulating, the others (including the ones that made you fell purposefully) laughs and mocks you for being so late.
Does that sounds fair to you?
Just use some empathy for once, please.
I think this belongs to stop asian hate tag, but if it isn't, please let me know.
