Forty-five minutes passed before Elsia could stop her tears, she remained where she sat her mind still spinning. Although she was sure she made the right decision she was also positive that it hurt like hell and that she wished she didn’t. She wished Tori would have never moved to Riverview. Using the sleeves of Moria’s jacket she wiped the tears stains from her face, wincing when she pressed to hard against her nose. A bitter laugh escaped her mouth, she’d forgotten she’d had a broken nose. Standing she walked over to the sink checking her face in the mirror, she would need to reapply the concealer before leaving. Checking the nearby cabinet she grabbed a wash cloth, opting to wash her face then fix her make up. Warm water ran for a few minutes before she moved the cloth under it, the sting of almost too hot water making her cringe.
“Whoops,” she muttered, getting to work on cleaning her face.
She felt better once she was finished, smiling slightly at her reflection noticing the bruise was paler than it was when she left almost three days ago. Turning off the water she leaned against the sink, staring up at the purple and teal ceiling above her.
“Elisa, are you okay in there?” Sharon asked, lightly knocking on the door.
“I’m fine, I’ll be out in a minute ok? I just need to make one more phone call.” Elsia replied, a little louder than she meant to.
The teenager waited until the footfalls faded before scooping the cordless off the bathroom floor. She fished the wadded up paper with Hartly siblings numbers. She dialed Lee’s number, giggling to herself as she imagined the hamster dance loudly blaring wherever the siblings were at the moment.
Much to Elsia’s disappointment the phone went to voicemail after 6 rings. “If you know this number you know who I am, leave a message and I’ll get back to you.”
“Hey Lee, it’s Elisa. I’m calling from my Aunts. I just wanted to let you know that I made it alright and wasn’t murdered on the way here. I decided what to do about my… boy problems. I think it was the right decision. I’ll let you know what it was later ok, not over a stupid voicemail. Nice message by the way. I will probably be on the train home in the morning so I’ll call you when I get back to my place. Assuming the cops aren’t waiting for me for leaving the jurisdiction. I probably should have thought of that before the whole ‘running away’ thing. Tata for now.”
After hanging up, she carefully reapplied her make up. She’d always been rubbish with it before, but had apparently gained the ability to hide a bruise perfectly. She exhaled, preparing herself for the rest of the night.
The girls were asleep by the time Elsia got out of the bathroom leaving only her aunt sitting on the living room couch, giving the girl a half concerned and half explain yourself now look. Taking a seat in the plush rocking chair across from her, Elsia began to tell her aunt everything that had happened. Her aunt waited until Elsia was done to begin to talk.
“I know it maybe difficult for you to go back to that school, especially if you are anything like your mother, so check into finishing your courses online. I’m sure if you explain your situation they wont have any problems with it. Also stop fighting Tori, now off to bed with you.” Sharon ordered, although kindly.
Elsia gave her aunt a hug before walking to the guest room, which was where she spent most of her time when her mother had fallen ill.
Kicking off her shoes Elsia fell into the bed, her hand latching onto the near by purple rabbit and pulling it to her chest, curling around it. Elsia dozed off not long after that.
Elsia slept peacefully through the night, begin awoken when the sun began to shine directly onto her. Groaning she lifted her head slightly before letting it fall back into the mattress.
“Damnit.” She muttered, before yawning loudly.
“Aunt Sharon! Do you have a Toothbrush I can have?!” Elsia yelled as she sat up.
“Yes! It’s already in the bathroom. It’s teal!” Sharon shouted from somewhere else in the house.
Elsia laughed of course her aunt would have random new toothbrushes to give people when they showed up without as much as an invitation. She rolled off the bed, catching herself on her hands and knees before standing up. Running her fingers through her hair with one hand, she opened the bedroom door with the other. Sleepily walking to the bathroom, peeking at the mirror first thing she was happy to see that her hair hadn’t become a rats nest overnight. Holding back a yawn she brushed her teeth, after finishing her morning routine she walked downstairs, flopping down at the kitchen table. Where her bright eyed and far to energetic for 6am cousins sat.
“Why are you here?” One of them asked.
“Because, if I don’t eat breakfast. I’m sure your mother will chase me down and force me to.” Elsia nonchalantly replied, leaning back in the chair to stretch.
Moments after Sharon placed a plate in front of her, on it sat two sausage biscuits and some scrambled eggs.
“Eat up, once I get the girls ready we will talk.”
Elsia nodded, picking up her fork. She wasn’t stupid enough to think she could get out of this house without talking to her aunt again. Besides as much as she liked to keep her problems to herself it was honestly nice to have someone to talk to that wasn’t a completely massive dick bag.
“What are your names by the way girls? I never asked last night.” Elsia muttered, her free hand to twirl her hair.
The youngest girl smiled up at Elsia, mouth full of biscuit. “I’m Serabeth, she is” Serabeth pointed to the girl on the left of Elsia. “Marie, and the oldest of us.”
Elsia glanced at the eldest, who wore a very grumpy face. It told her how very little she wanted to be at this table, conversing.
“Gwendolyn, and don’t call me Gwen.”
“It’s a pleasure to meet all of you, I’m sure you’ve figured it out by now but I’m Elsia. I am your cousin.”
The conversation fell flat as the girls ate, under the watchful eye of their mother and aunt. Even Gwendolyn looked to be enjoying herself a little bit, not being forced to converse with her older cousin. Once all the plates were clean, Elsia collected them and put them into the sink. Leaving her aunt to get the girls ready, where they were going she didn’t know. Two of the three looked excited to be going at least.
“Elsia, leave the dishes, go sit in the den and wait for me okay?”
“Sure, just let me get my shoes and rabbit from the room. So not cute by the way, leaving my bunny on the bed.” Elsia called as she walked from the kitchen.
Stuffing the rabbit into her coat pocket, she slid her shoes on. Descending the stairs once she was ready, she plucked the picture of her and her mother sitting together off the wall.
“I wonder if she’ll let me have this?” She asked herself out loud.
“Yes, you can have it.”
Elsia nearly jumped a foot in the air, looking to her aunt with a startled expression. Sharon laughed, ignoring Elsia blazing red face.
“Here’s a to-go bag I pulled together for you. Here is your train ticket, take my Sudan and leave it in the parking lot. The train leaves in an hour.”
Taking the travel bag from her aunts hand, she pulled the strap over her shoulder. Oofing at the weight of it, what on earth was in this thing? She asked herself. Elsia caught the keys before her aunt could warn her they were coming at her face.
“How’d you know I had my license?”
Sharon laughed, pointing to a picture on the wall across from her Elsia hadn’t noticed before. She squinted a little as she analyzed it. It was her…mother standing in front of a car, grinning proudly.
“Liena got hers when she was your age too, you take a lot after her you know.”
Elsia half smiled, offering her aunt a final hug before leaving the house. She took a seat in the Sudan checking, buckling up as she performed her mental check list. She didn’t drive a lot in Riverview, usually when she and Moria needed food and Jimmy was working elsewhere. Backing out of the driveway she started her trip back home.
