there are a million brilliant things about hypno-punko but I think it’s one of the best concept albums because it elaborated the “conceit” form of pop punk that i always talk about in a way that shows how genre itself is conceptual! american idiot would go on to fail at exactly that--it’s like the opposite thing. i also really appreciated that it took a stab at a concept album without lapsing into nerd rock, not that i hate nerd rock, as you know, but this balance--between making intellectual or conceptual music, or music about books, without becoming nerd rock--is difficult to maintain and mtx for example has failed at it over and over again
