Friday Favourite: Vilnius, Lithuania!
After last friday’s trip to Andalusia, we decided to go up to north – east and discover the city that does not usually appear among top five in many travelers’ lists. However with its unique old town, green hills, cozy squares, tasty beer and friendly people Vilnius will definitely surprise everyone and will make them to adjust their lists.
Your trip I would advice to start from the Cathedral which is situated in the heart of the city. Even if you are not very religious, majestic, snow white cathedral will make you to gasp from its astonishment.
Afterwards, if you’re ready for hiking you should walk up to Gediminas tower and admire an amazing panoramic view of Vilnius. From this spot you can see two faces of the city. On the right side you can see growing skyscrapers with business and shopping centers. On the left side you can see the roofs of old Vilnius commemorating centuries of cultural prosperity and architectural heritage.
After admiring panoramic view you should go down and dive into amazingly beautiful old town. It is easy to get lost in its narrow streets, but the variety of architectural sights won’t make you bored. Be sure to visit the main palace of Vilnius University, one of the oldest universities in eastern and central Europe. Next to it there is Daukantas square with presidential palace. A bit further you can reach a huge square with town hall.
After exploring old town you can head down to Užupis – independent district of Vilnius which is often called Lithuanian version of Montmartre. The bohemian area with its own laws and even constitution!
Finally after all day walking you probably should definitely feel hungry. For the nice lunch/ dinner I would offer you to visit Bix bar. They offer very nice food for cheap prices and of course the best Lithuanian beer. If you get to Bix late enough you can find there karaoke night or dances according old good rock music. Do not feel like dancing? Well you can always play pool of foosball there as well!
And if you feel that variety of beers is too small, after dinner you can always visit Alaus namai (Beer house). There you can find beers from all corners of Lithuania as well as traditional snacks that go together with the beer. On Saturdays you can usually find live music concerts as well.
One of the best things about nightlife in Vilnius, all bars, pubs and clubs usually do not close earlier than 4 a.m. in the morning! And the prices are really good (beer start from 1.5 Euro). My final advice for your visit is if you have enough energy to handle nightly barathlon you should go to meet sunrise on the hill of three crosses! From there you can see a beautiful sunrise and how the city wakes up for the new day!
A bit different description than you expected before reading? Well you can always visit Vilnius and destroy all your prejudices you had about this city.
