Music Generation Laois, on behalf of Laois Music Education Partnership, is now seeking to establish a panel of Music Tutors for the Music Generation Laois School of Rock. We are seeking submissions from experienced:

Acoustic and/or Electric Guitar Tutors, Bass Guitar Tutors , Keyboard Tutors, Drum Tutors (Drum Kit) for vacancies and/or opportunities to tender that may arise during the 2012-2013 academic year, including an exciting initiative in association with Youth Work Ireland Laois in the newly launched Portlaoise Youth Café as well as other initiatives in locations across Laois. RTE LYRIC FM COMPOSER IN RESIDENCE Monday 4th February 10.00 - 12.00am

Composer in Residence at RTE Lyric FM, Linda Buckley will explore the similarities between creating new music for different 'forces' from electronica to electro-acoustic works, to writing for symphony orchestras and the human voice. Admission Free. Doors open at 9.30 am.

To complement our concert with Northern Lights Dubh agus Geal - Songs of Fjord and Glen, we at the Cathedral are pleased to be collaborating with the musicians and WIT to present this seminar about the fusion of two traditional music types that when brought together reveal a wonderful new storytelling landscape. The Three members of Northern Lights Lorcan Macmathuna, Raphael de Cock and Remi Decker will discuss and illustrate their atmospheric music. Admission is FREE.

NORTHERN LIGHTS CONCERT

Northern Lights is a blending of Norse and Irish: sagas, stories, soundscapes, cultural flavours and perspectives, through a meeting of Celtic and Nordic music and songs. It is a project devised by Lorcán Mac Mathúna (voice, whistle), Raphael De Cock (voice, pipes, siberian harp, shrutti, hardanger fiddle, jews harp), and James Mahon (uillean pipes, whistle flutes). Unusual, haunting and perfect for Waterford's Viking Triangle!

Like their landscapes, the music of Ireland and Scandinavia are spectacular, inspiring, and very different to each other. Northern Lights bring “Songs of the Fjord and Glen” to Christ Church Cathedral in Waterford - an experimental exploration of Irish and Scandinavian traditional songs and dance music that connects a vast musical landscape. This performance evokes everything between the ice of the North sea and the warmth of Irish summer pastures, in search of a deeper understanding of the things that unite us all.

"Northern Lights is a new form of presenting traditional music where Ireland’s music and our oldest singing style, sean nós, is put in contrast to Scandinavian musical traditions and singing styles. The differences and similarities we see are intriguing, exciting, and profoundly beautiful."

The European Orchestral Ensemble will accompany four Soloists from major Opera companies; including Opera North, English National Opera and D’Oyly Carte.

This wonderful production is cleverly staged and choreographed, and authentically costumed, and will appeal to the romantic as much as the music aficionado. It continues to be hugely popular all over the country.
