Track #3-52: Wave (Goodbye) Beam
Artist: Vidboy
Original: Planet Tallon IV by Kenji Yamamoto and Kouichi Kyuma
Length: 3:33
Following up the end of the long run of Zebes-related songs is this new remix of the first Tallon Overworld theme from Metroid Prime by Vidboy. This theme previously got a relatively faithful (if powerful) remix on the very first album; this new remix is primarily an acoustic guitar theme, with support from drums, violin, a vocal sample, and piano (with the piano in particular being used for parts in the original that were piano as well). The mixing of the tracks brings a slight electronic edge to certain instruments. At the 2:39 mark, Vidboy plays a guitar solo over the final section of the original, before fading out on the introductory riff.
I gave this three stars, but I can't emphasize enough that this is a very high three. Three+ stars, if you would. The arrangement is very good, capturing the soft wonder of Samus's first visit to Tallon IV's overworld, and the instruments all complement each other well. The solo and little riffs over the original bring an intriguing flair (special shoutout to the high arpeggio notes just before the solo), and the processing brings unexpected but welcome turns that keep the remix from (ironically, considering what I've been praising it for) being too comfortable. This is a remix I could see playing in a cafe.
