Ashley Kriel, our hero! A year before I was born, you died fighting for my freedom. 9 July 1987. You sacrificed everything, so the we could be free. Today, we have tasted the fruits of freedom, but we know, as you knew, that political freedom without economic emancipation means little in the lives of millions who are caught in the vicious cycle of poverty. You represented the best of Cape Town, and the best of the Cape Flats. Within your story, we see the best in ourselves. And we declare, unanimously, that our people will experience economic emancipation in our lifetime. It is, as Mandela said, an ideal which we hope to live for and to see realised. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which we are prepared to die. Today, 9th July, marks the 30th anniversary of your murder by security forces. We remember your sacrifices. We shall always remember!
