i think like, there's a quality to a lot of speculative genre fiction where the capacity for resonance and catharsis with our personal, real life experiences, feelings, and views of the world is so rich and wide. that's what makes the good shit hit so hard, beyond capturing an escapist quality. while art is not the same as the artist, esp when it comes to art that (often) requires collaboration and many hands, it can feel like a line of not just communication, but mutual understanding on a person to person level, speaking abt life.

i think that's what makes stuff like this so jarring. when you feel like you've connected with someone on very broad themes of connection, love, trauma, power, etc. but it turns out your application of those ideas are morally/ethically oppositional, it's just....incomprehensible? almost a betrayal?

tho with konaka, it at least is a later development went on to create some of the cringiest shit in the digimon franchise, and while it applies a weird shade to some of his earlier work, it's more retrospectively sad than tainted. rok is fishier bc it makes me question the entirety of the narrative and what it wants to communicate. its nuances and substance are not for nothing (esp in the context of say, disability in an anime series), but it feels insidious or misshappen. and like you said, it just makes the work worse, like i know ppl, including myself, were puzzled by some recent directions in the story but had (or even still have?) some faith they would shake out to be either worth it or at least not poisonous to everything else. at the v least, in order to rly go further, i have to actively lower my expectations, which sucks!

If you don’t vote for the Democrat, the Republican wins. You get that, right? It’s pretty basic shit. And lots of people either didn’t vote, or voted for a third party candidate, or even voted for Trump, because she wasn’t the candidate they wanted to win. And that. Is fucking. Bullshit.
