Vicarious connection or vicarious enjoyment is something I encounter again and again and I'm starting to see a pattern.

The first time I realized I'm vicariously connecting to someone was with my spouse's therapist. I was asked to be present for their first session, just to ease his anxiety. I listened and watched them talk, and couldn't quite understand why I felt excited, safe and a bit too happy that my spouse is "forming a connection" with someone else. I knew I wasn't happy for them in the traditional way, it was more like I experienced the exchange through them, and since it wasn't me who was talking to the therapist I could acctually feel something, I could safely experience connection. My brain had convinced itself that it was forming a connection with the therapist, even tho I hadn't spoken a word or engaged at all. I experienced connection through someone else, vicariously.
