I vividly remember my first buy from Danscomp. It was olive shirt with a rhino in the middle. I remember thinking it was a so awesome cause rhinos are cool and green is my shiz so this is double trouble. I didn’t really know who Vic Murphy was just the fact he’s the guy who cosigned the shirt. Honestly though outside of Ryan Nyquist, Mat Hoffman, and Dave Mirra, everyone was so underground to me then but I bought his shirt anyway and googled him to figure a bit more about this rider. There wasn’t nearly as much information on the net back and slowly throughout the years I come to know a bit more about who Vic was. I guess that his prime years has past by the time I got into BMX and even bought the shirt. From what I understand it is widely accepted that Vic played a big part in making BMX street its own thing with Dirt Bros and the San Diego scene. How I don’t really know. These days I guess he’s a youth skatepark pastor, from what you can tell Vic Murphy is still very much a mystery.

It’s weird that so much of our history from that time period and previous is unknown to the general public. The truth is that myself and a lot of people want to know more, where BMX comes from, our roots, the early pioneers and who they were. Things we can’t learn by just watching Aggroman cause quite honestly we need more context with it to truly understand it. Maybe it’s this generational longing for something that was much more real, maybe I just really like history. I’d be cool if the older crowd spoke up more about their experiences and times with BMX, instead of just constantly complaining online and how it was much better back then. Give the younger generations a reason to believe that, cause all they see is your nose is up in the air cause some of us ride our bars a little forward.
