On 6 May, squadron aircraft shot down 2 VPAF MiG-21s with AIM-9s.[6][8] On 16 August F-4J BuNo 157262 was hit by an SA-2, both crewmen CDR J Pitzen and LT O Pender were killed and their remains were identified in November 1994.

Laing ejects from the rear seat of an F-4 Phantom II of Fighter Squadron (VF) 114 after the aircraft was hit by antiaircraft fire during a strike on Kep Airfield in North Vietnam. The pilot, Lieutenant Charles Southwick, ejected after this photograph was taken. Before bailing out of their airplane, the pair was credited with shooting down a North Vietnamese MiG-17.
