Veyle fans, you may remember that I once did a post comparing Veyle to other characters within other media. https://www.tumblr.com/dexjarxenoengage/790650778159316992/something-has-crossed-my-mind-recently-about
💬 0 🔁 1 ❤️ 7 · Something has crossed my mind recently about Veyle. And it’s the similarities between her and a lot of characters. There ar
I have decided I want to do this again, but with different characters. Some may have come from franchises that I had already discussed. But most of them are characters from other anime and video games.
Just like before, there will be spoilers that need to be avoided if you want to see these media and characters for yourself. The major spoilers will include Metaphor: Refantazio, Kingdom Hearts, Digimon Frontiers, Kill La Kill, Pokémon Sun and Moon, Bakugan, and minor spoilers for Black Clover. And let’s not forget about Fire Emblem Engage spoilers.
Before we begin, let’s remember what we are comparing Veyle to these characters for. Veyle is the deuteragonist of Fire Emblem Engage, the missing sibling of Alear, and is a Fell Dragon force to fight along her evil father Sombron against her will. Veyle’s story is about overcoming her abusive relationships, using her powers as a Fell Dragon force to good, and her relationship with her sibling: Alear.
The Female “Sixth Rangers”
To start things off, let’s talk about Super Sentai/Power Rangers, but mainly Super Sentai. Engine Sentai Go-Onger/Power Rangers RPM has a Female Silver Ranger. Silver is a common color for Sixth Rangers, but this is the only example where a Sixth Ranger is female. Once Veyle joins Alear, she is one of the only few characters besides themselves and the four primary royals to not die in battle.
It’s worth noting however that Miu has a brother that also considered a Sixth Ranger alongside her: Go-On Gold: Hiruto Suto. So if you want to be technical, she is a Seventh Ranger, but she is included alongside her brother and the other Sixth Ranger as part of a Super Mode in Gokaiger. It’s a long story.
In any event, Miu having a brother teamwork aside, she also does have a relationship with the Red Ranger, but hers is more romantic. Whereas Alear and Veyle is strictly platonic because they are siblings. So it’s more natural to compare Alear and Veyle to Hiruto and Miu.
The “Silver” Royal family
Noelle Silva from Black Clover is born from the noble family: House Silva. However, due to being unable to control her magic, she is mistreated and abused by her family members. By the oldest sibling: Nozel’s behest, Noelle would forced to join the Black Bulls, a Squad of Magic Knights that aren’t very well liked, and is the same Squad that, the main character: Asta, would join in as well.
Noelle is dissmive of Asta at first, until he saves her from her own Magic going berserk. Asta ultimately had nothing but nice things to say to her and the rest is history. Through her newfound admiration that she would rather not admit out loud, Noelle would continue to master her powers and slowly become a better mage and a better person.
Although Noelle may not be the actual deuteragonist like Yuno is, she is a Tritagonist enough to Asta’s protagonist. The main thing is that, unlike Veyle, Noelle is already a part of Asta’s Black Bulls team almost the very same moment he joined. Also, both Noelle and Veyle are of nobility and are associated with the color silver.
As stated earlier, both of them have suffered from a poor family life, and it takes Asta and Alear showing them kindness for them to grow beyond their weaker selves. Difference being is that Alear is Veyle’s older sibling, Asta isn’t related to Noelle. Also, unlike with Veyle and Sombron, Noelle is able to better her relationship with her siblings over the course of Black Clover.
Now we enter spoiler territory for real
Naminé: the girl of mystery
When it comes to Naminé and how she relates to Veyle, it’s worth noting that I talked about Riku once comparing him to Veyle. Naminé is the reason Riku takes his first step in learning to accept his darkness, after he has been wrestling with it because of his mistakes. Naminé helping Riku makes sense when you consider, not just having Kairi’s similarities, but she herself is also someone with “evil” powers and is atoning for it.
For context; Naminé is a Nobody who was born with Kairi’s appearance after Sora turns into a heartless to free his beloved Kairi from her slumber. Naminé has the power to manipulate the memories of Sora and all those who come into contact with him. Some of the Organization XIII sought to use this girls power to manipulate Sora, and she was blackmailed into lonely fate to force her into obedience.
Not unlike Naminé, although she wasn’t aware of it at the time, Veyle was being used by the antagonist to spread chaos in Elyos. And her love for her father was being used to force her into her position. Both Alear and Sora fought to free them from their oppression in spite of what they had unwittingly done to them.
Although Sora would forget about meeting Naminé, she would continue to be an ally to Sora, even without being a Keyblade Wielder. Same for Veyle with Alear. And finally, both of them have a white color scheme.
Lillie
Lillie’s character , in this case, will mainly be focused on the original Sun and Moon games. Now unlike Veyle, Lillie and Lusamine did have a good relationship prior to an accident that cause Lillie’s father to disappear. After Lusamine meets Nihilego trying to find Mohn, Lusamine goes off the deep end and mistreats Lillie from verbal abuse down to making Lillie’s clothes resemble the aforementioned Ultra Beast.
Lillie and Veyle are both white associated female characters with abusive parents and both learn to find their agency through the support of the protagonists. Lillie also has a brother in the form of Gladion. And both Lillie and Veyle still hold some love for their parents.
Main difference being that Veyle reaches divine acceptance that Sombron never cared about her and never will. Lusamine also shows signs that she can be saved after she is defeated. And this is all to say nothing of the difference alterations of Lusamine’s character varying across the media she is in.
The power of Darkness:
Koichi Kimura is one of the characters I had intended to be the Digimon rep to compare to Veyle when it comes to “Sixth Rangers” in Digimon. The reason why is because Koichi is not the brother of the main character, but his main foil: Koji. So I decided to use Ken because she had more in common with Veyle than Koichi did IMO.
Getting back on topic, both Veyle and Koichi were corrupted by the antagonists and used to bring despair to our heroes. Veyle and Koichi’s powers both connect to darkness in some way. And both learn to come to terms with their powers to be used for good.
And in some way, both Veyle and Koichi gain a new power for their redemption. Alear becomes an Emblem Veyle can Engage with. While the Spirits of Darkness take on a less evil and more powerful forms, with those spirits being used to unlock stronger Digimon forms for the protagonists.
Veyle before Veyle was cool
Does anyone remember Bakugan and the first season plot twist that rocked our childhoods? Masquerade, one of the main antagonists of the first season of Bakugan is a split personality of Alice created when Naga came into contact with the Silent Core. Masquerade committed a lot of crimes, and once Alice and her friends learn the truth, she is wracked with guilt.
Along with Hydranoid being a Darkus Bakugan, Alice is pretty much Veyle in almost every possible way. The only exceptions are that Alice and Dan aren’t related like with Alear and Veyle, Alice gets to live with her grandfather (who suffered as much as she did) unlike with Veyle and Sombron, and Alice doesn’t have a sibling. Oh, and Masquerade turns face after being Dan for the last time, while Veyle’s evil self stayed evil and needed to be purged for good.
Veyle if she was the protagonist
Kill La Kill’s main protagonist: Ryuko Matoi teams up with best Sailor Moon Uniform of all time: Senketsu in order to fight Satsuki Kiryūin and find the person responsible for her father’s death. So long story; Nui Harime is responsible for it, and she is working with the real main antagonist: Satsuki’s evil mother: Ragyo Kiryūin. And more importantly, Ragyo is Ryuko’s biological mother, making Satsuki her older sister. And yes, Ryuko took it as well as you’d expect.
So… yeah, Ryuko is basically Veyle if she was the protagonist. Veyle and Ryuko both have to come to terms with their origins. Both have been manipulated by the main antagonists. And both try to redeem their evil parents, but fail.
And of course, both Veyle and Ryuko had an antagonistic with their older siblings while being ignorant of their relationship. With Veyle and Ryuko both having a breakdown after learning the truth. And in a sense, both Alear and Satsuki make an effort to save them both.
Afterwards Veyle and Alear and Ryuko and Satsuki bury the hatchet in order to defeat their respective evil parents. Ryuko and Veyle have a dark motif, with Satsuki and Alear having a light motif. And both get a happy ending as siblings, albeit with Ryuko and Alear having to part ways with their respective power friends.
The last party members
And finally, last but certainly not least, Basilio Magnus from Metaphor: Refantazio. My favorite character in Metaphor being compared to my favorite character in Fire Emblem Engage. As the last party members you get in both games.
Basilio and Veyle both had sibling relationships and is the younger of them. Both had their older siblings sacrificing themselves for their sakes. And it was their moment of clarity that convinces them to turn against the main antagonists they were associated with, helped with the influence of the protagonists.
Basilio is ironically the popular opposite of Veyle when it comes to their stat. Basilio is an all out physical attacker with the Berserker Archetype, while Veyle is a magic nuke. Also, Basilio likes Sweets, Veyle likes spicy food.
I hate Veyle's role in the story of Fire Emblem Engage. She's being mind controlled for 70% of it, and then it makes me just feel like I never get a chance to meet the real veyle or care about her. Also, evil veyle isn't even entertainingly evil. She's better than Sombron, but that's a low freaking bar. She's no Zephia or Griss or Marni.
What saves Veyle is her support conversations. For a character who I find very badly handled within the story, her supports are delightfully silly. Her and Clanne seem to just be pickling friends, and that's funny. I didn't know it'd devolve into tongue twisters about pickled peppers, but it's pretty funny. And veyle otherwise having a ridiculous spice tolerance is weirdly funny to me. I find it just very silly. Even her supports with Gregory, Zelestia and Madeline seem more interesting than Mauvier's supports with them. Mainly because Veyle has some actual emotion in her voice, because she's got trauma from the four hounds and their behaviour towards her.
Mauvier is still a blank slate to me. He's a stoic devoted to veyle and depressingly dedicated to penance. At least veyle is silly and multifaceted. She's sad about everything she did, she has trauma from being hurt by people, she has a weird spice tolerance, she's at least more interesting than mauvier is to me. I don't want to say I hate the two of them, but I do wish Mauvier at least had some sort of bonus personality trait. All the characters in this game have at least some kind of quirk. And yet mauvier is just...well, he's lacking in any personality to me beyond his story relevance. And that's something I think the game needed to fix.
