Evan hated fall. He hated when it started to get cold and all the trees and plants started to die. It reminded him of bad times. When his brother died. When Boyd died. Fall meant death.
“I can hear you brooding from here,” Baby said, standing in Evan’s bedroom doorway. Evan had been lying in bed since he woke up at nine that morning, and he hadn’t moved since. A glance at his phone told him it was 2:07 in the afternoon.
“I’m having a bad day,” Evan explained, as Baby walked in and plopped himself into the bed. He wrapped his arms around Evan’s waist and Evan smiled. Even when he was feeling at his worst, Baby always knew how to make him smile.
“If you stay in bed all day then I can’t give you the present I brought you,” Baby said.
“Present?” Evan asked, raising an eyebrow.
“Yeah! It’s downstairs, so you gotta get up and go get it,” Baby said, sitting up. “C'mon.”
Evan huffed but allowed Baby to yank him out of his bed. He was yanked all the way to his living room. When he saw the “present”, his heart dropped.
“What the fuck, Baby?” Evan breathed and Baby laughed.
“Ta da!” he said, waving his hands in the air in the direction of his “present”.
Standing in Evan’s living room, shoeless and shivering under the air vent that was over the TV, was Boyd. He looked so familiar, his skin the same shade of brown, and his eyes shining with that same sad shine. He was just as tall and broad as he had been on the last day Evan had seen him. But something was different. Evan couldn’t figure out what, but there was something about him that didn’t feel familiar.
“Vern? Is that really you?” he asked, managing to find his voice even though his lungs were struggling to take in air.
Boyd smiled, his face lighting up and Evan exhaled hard. “Yeah, Ev. It’s really me.” His voice was warm, and it sounded the same as when Evan had heard it last, deep but kind. Evan’s heart was going to burst in his chest.
He took three steps forward and threw his arms around Boyd’s neck.
“I never thought I’d see you again,” he whispered into Boyd’s shoulder. Boyd was squeezing him so hard that it almost hurt, but Evan didn’t care, knowing he was squeezing back just as hard.
