The air quality improved from 'severe' to 'very poor' category in Noida, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad and Faridabad, and 'poor' in Gurgaon in the National Capital Region (NCR) on Wednesday, according to a government agency. Although concentration of major air pollutants PM2.5 and PM10 remained high in the five immediate neighbours of Delhi, according to the air quality index (AQI) maintained by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). An AQI between zero and 50 is considered 'good', 51 and 100 'satisfactory', 101 and 200 'moderate', 201 and 300 'poor', 301 and 400 'very poor', and 401 and 500 'severe'. The average 24-hour AQI at 4 pm on Wednesday was 360 in Ghaziabad, 340 in Greater Noida, 327 in Faridabad, 309 in Noida, and 288 in Gurgaon, according to the CPCB's Sameer app.
my hot take for the day (which has probably been talked about many times in better ways) : lotteries and scratch games are tailor-made to exploit the poor and desperate.
i see this first-hand with my partner and his family. they’re poor. not like, impoverished, but like. his parents make, combined, less than what my mom (an attorney) makes in a year. both his parents and his brother work at walmart.
i grew up... somewhat poor. i’ve only realized this as an adult bc my parents never really showed when we were struggling. despite growing up somewhat poor, i had never seen someone play a scratch game or enter the lottery until I started dating my partner. his family buys scratch tickets at least once a week, and they enter the lottery decently regularly too. my partner, as a coping mechanism for being poor and living in a suffocating household at 21, always says “when we win the lottery...” and talks about an idea where he could live comfortably and buy the things he wants.
it’s just like. a really uncomfortable cognitive thing i’ve noticed where him and his family seem dependent on the possibility of winning big on a scratch ticket in order to keep hope about their terrible economic situation. i wonder how much money they’ve wasted on duds, or ten dollar tickets. and it’s not my partner’s fault, and it’s not his family’s fault. the poor aren’t to blame for wanting to improve their situation. lotteries and scratch games are the problem. they offer the possibility of social movement (something that the ~american dream~ allegedly also provides) for a measly, affordable price. it’s a (in my opinion) worse type of gambling addiction because of how fueled by desperation it is.
imo this is different than casinos and lootboxes, though i’d imagine the cognitive effects are the same. in a casino you take money you have and spend it in the hopes of improving it, an you can only do this if you have (at the moment) disposable income. people go to casinos and expect to maybe gain $200. lootboxes promise you items and skins if you pay $10. many scratch tickets offer you the possibility of comfort for life for $1, $5, $10, of course poor people feel beholden to the small sliver of hope.

this is the saddest thing ever
