A thick cloud of smoke hung heavy inside the cruiser as he cranked down the window and flicked the cigarette butt out onto the pavement. The unmarked car stayed tucked tight behind the billboard just off the highway, engine idling low, the kind of spot that gave him a clear line on anyone coming down the stretch. He leaned back in the seat for a second, eyes drifting over to the passenger side where the bag of weed and that fat roll of hundreds waited nice little bonus from shaking down that two bit thug earlier.
He started peeling the rubber band off the cash, already thinking about how easy it would slide into his pocket, when another car cruised by at a normal clip. Nothing flashy, no real reason most cops would bother. But rules like that had stopped mattering to him a long time ago.
Without missing a beat, he flipped on the lights and siren, the sudden wail cutting through the quiet afternoon as he pulled out fast to close the gap. The tires hummed against the asphalt while he eased up behind the vehicle, keeping just enough distance to let them feel the pressure.
