new au! haven't come up with a name yet so hang tight on that. this is just 3k of necessary setup because I want them in a very specific scenario but I need that scenario to make sense. alternating max and kimi POV's. no romance at the moment, so gen!
relevant heads up: kimi is the normal amount of weird about max, magical shenanigans, alternate reality, canon universe but also boarding school au, GP is an exasperated unofficial father, the idea of an age gap and yet... no age gap.
Kimi reads over the instructions again carefully, looking up when Ollie nudges him with his elbow.
"Are you excited?"
He nods, gaze darting around the room. All the drivers are gathered, and the FIA has brought the spell representatives. All that's left is to go one by one and preform it— it's delicate, so they have to be careful.
"I hope I have eight championships."
He keeps his voice low enough that it won't carry to the older drivers, even though they aren't paying attention. Ollie rolls his eyes fondly.
"Some of those will be mine. Maybe we're roommates and share a trophy case."
If Kimi needs to have a roommate ten years in the future, he's going to be really annoyed. He taps his fingers against the table thoughtfully, glancing at Alex and Alonso. They're both ahead of him, but he goes third.
Ten years into the future, one week with himself, and then he comes back. Writing down stock names is illegal, but he's going to try and remember a few anyways, even though the spell allegedly has ways to prevent it.
The representative clears her throat, and Alex stands up, keeping his eyes closed as she starts to murmur. They're all quiet, holding their breath— and then he's gone in a soft flash of light.
"Oh wow,"
Ollie's voice is quiet next to him, and Kimi is still staring at where Alex had been in awe. It worked, he'd gone to the actual future. The repetitive checks the tablet next to her before nodding.
"Success! Fernando, it's your turn."
Lewis leans back in his chair, mouth quirked.
"He'll probably still be racing."
The comment earns him a few groans as Fernando grins, but his eyes slide shut a moment later, and then he's gone as well. Kimi feels his stomach churn when he realizes he's next, eyes darting around the table nervously.
His gaze lands land on Max— it usually does when he's nervous, the older driver is always the calm of the storm— and relaxes slightly at Max's reassuring smile, eyes gentle as he mouths you're fine at him.
"Kimi, remember what you need to be focusing on. You want to visit yourself in this world in ten years, alright?"
He wonders just how important the this world part is— it'd be cool to visit another world— he can hear her murmuring to his left, but he cracks his right eye just slightly. He can spot the older drivers on the other side of the table, Max leaning closer to Charles as the other man whispers something that makes him smile, eyes crinkled at the edges, and the familiar surge of jealousy flashes through him.
It's not fair that it's so easy for everyone else to get Max's attention, not when Kimi wants it more than they do. It's not fair that he'll never be Max's type, nine years too young, even though he'd be better than all of them.
"Kimi—!"
She sounds slightly panicked, and his eyes snap open, still looking at Max as he gets a strange warping sensation in his gut, and then—
------
Max stretches his legs, glancing over the edge of the balcony as Lully paces nervously next to him.
"Isn't this kind of high?"
Surely he was never this nervous when he was Lully's age, young and anxious, checking and rechecking his grapple gear.
"Relax, you've got six coils on you. We're not going that far."
Max is only wearing three coils, and even that's overkill, heavy across his thighs where the filament is wrapped around them. He'd be fine with one, but Lully is on his first "real" drop today, and he wanted him to feel reassured.
Technically Lully's first drop is in four hours with the rest of the class, but he's Max's junior, and Max isn't going to let him embarrass himself, so he'd snuck him out. Besides, he's only missing the back half of biomechanics and his lunch break.
He pats him on the shoulder, straightening.
"Come on, it's easy. And if you don't get it, I'll catch you. I promise."
Lully steps to the edge of the balcony, and Max reminds himself that if his junior reports him for what he's about to do, then he's equally at fault for snitching— and then he shoves him off the balcony.
"No—!"
Lully screams on the way down, everyone does on their first time, but Max waits, crouched at the edge of the balcony, muscles tense.
7.
His junior has managed to uncurl from a panicked ball and into a more controlled fall, assessing his environment.
6.
Max could still get to him in time, easily, without even having to pull off questionable moves to keep them both from splatting against the ground.
5.
The screaming has stopped, which is definitely progress, and Lully has clearly spotted the rebar scaffolding he's supposed to grapple to.
4.
He leans over the edge of the rail, adrenaline starting to spike. If he gets a junior killed, he'll never hear the end of it.
3.
Lully needs to get his shit together.
2—
The snap of a grapple has his shoulders relaxing, and he spots the end of it wrap around the scaffolding as Lully goes careening towards it, barely remembering to brace his feet properly in time to land.
"Yes! Good job!"
He pumps both fists in the air when Lully turns to look at him, laughing as he flips him off.
"That was great! Now come back."
Preferably before someone comes out to investigate the screaming and gets them both in trouble. Lully is still tentative as he grapples back, but at least he's doing it, landing heavily back on the balcony.
"You absolute cunt, I can't believe you shoved me,"
He's poking Max in the chest, and Max grins, leaning forward to ruffle his hair.
"But you did it, didn't you? I knew you would. Now come on, before we get spotted."
Lully pulls off his grapple gear, leaving it and the wrapped coils by Max.
"Thank you for that. Even if you were a dick."
Max waves a hand, grabbing the gear and shoving it into his extra backpack that he'd brought with him.
"Don't mention it. Seriously, it'll get me in trouble."
Lully laughs, waving at him before he disappears back down the stairs, and Max weighs his options before shouldering the backpack and stepping back to the edge of the balcony again. He can take a shortcut back to the dorms, he just has to avoid getting spotted by any of their ground wardens— he's got six tickets for grappling in restricted areas already on his account, and if he gets a seventh he'll have to attend counseling. Again.
He jumps, allowing himself a few seconds of glorious free fall as he lets out a whoop before firing a grapple, heart in his throat as he falls into the motions. Fire, swing, land, push off, fire, fire again— no landing spots above the pond, it's a no-grapple zone, but it can be cleared if you double push—
There's a thunderous crack in the sky near the cliffs, and his eyes widen as he spots a bright flash of light.
"What the..."
Change of plans. He shoves the backpack with his extra gear behind an exhaust fan on top of the maths building, pausing long enough to grab the extra coils and secure them to his system before he takes off again. The flash was either at the edge of the cliffs or above the ocean, but if he boosts his grapples...
He cuts a few corners close, whipping past one of the towers so quickly he barely catches his own reflection in the window, wind slicing against his face as he squints. He should be wearing a helmet at this speed, but it's too late for that now.
His eyes widen as he gets closer. He can see to his right a few of the grapple wardens coming in, but they're too far away to see what he's seeing.
Someone is falling through the sky, and they're not wearing gear. They're not falling properly either, which is definitely concerning, and Max is wishing he'd paid more attention in Recovery and Triage last semester, instead of trying to fix the vertigo problem with his triple corkscrew.
He clicks up on his boost settings against with his thumb, which pushes him past "student authorized gear" and firmly into "jailbroken gear", but he's willing to defend the situation if he has to, using a double grapple to launch up into the air. He'll only have one arm to grapple with if he has to carry them, and the speed they're going— he's definitely about to fuck up his shoulder. Are they screaming? He's pretty sure he can hear screaming.
Max slams into the other person, one arm wrapping tightly around them to keep them against his chest as they spin for a moment. Sea, cliffs, sky, sea again, sky again— he doesn't usually get nauseous like this, but the added weight is fucking with him.
Rebar!
He snaps out his grapple, preemptively wincing as he sees the slack in his line lessen. This is going to hurt so bad.
It yanks his shoulder out as the line goes taut, and he bites into his lip hard with a muffled shout. He feels the tension around his thigh change as he runs through a coil.
There are arms wrapping more solidly around him as the person clings, which— great! They're not dead! Unlike how Max will be when the wardens get their hands on him.
He hits the ground hard, rolling to take most of the impact to his back and good shoulder, the air punched out of him when they land. The stranger rolls off of him to stagger a few feet away and throw up, and Max pushes himself onto his good arm with a shaken wheeze, trying to get a good look at who he's getting himself in trouble for.
It's another boy, maybe his age, not dressed for falling through the sky at all. He's in jeans and a black shirt, unfamiliar symbols and words scattered across it. Brown curly hair, wide, startled green eyes, massive neck—
"Max?"
He immediately narrows his eyes.
"How do you know my name?"
The heavy thud of boots hitting the ground makes him wince, and Max drops dramatically back onto the ground.
"Warden, I was doing a good deed! See? I saved his life."
He cracks an eye open to see which warden it is as he hears the familiar sound of a helmet being pulled off, and immediately drops his head back down with a defeated sigh.
"Warden Lambiase."
GP huffs a small laugh, nudging his calf with the toe of his boot.
"As soon as you're out of the infirmary you're on house arrest, Verstappen. How's the shoulder?"
Max winces.
"Dislocated, I think."
GP steps over him to crouch by the other kid, who looks like someone has just told him the sky is green.
"Who are you?"
He's looking at them both as if they have two heads, and Max isn't exactly sure why, but he also isn't sure why he'd known his name. Or why he'd been falling through the sky.
He's caught himself quite the mystery boy.
"Antonelli. My name is Antonelli."
Max doesn't know any Antonellis. He sits up, cradling his bad arm.
"Where'd you come from?"
Antonelli looks at his shoulder and goes slightly green, but he's still staring at Max's face.
"Um, I am... not from here."
GP raises an eyebrow.
"That much I had figured out."
Antonelli makes a face.
"No, like, not from this world. I was part of a spell, and it has gone really, really wrong, and I have no idea what is happening right now."
Huh. Guess they're both going to the infirmary.
Max pushes himself to his feet, biting back a noise as it jostles his shoulder.
"I can take him to the infirmary, Warden Lambiase."
GP barks out a laugh, pointing a finger at him.
"You are not leaving my sight, Verstappen."
...Max probably deserves that.
------
Kimi can't stop staring at Max as he follows behind GP— who is buff, how did he fall into a world where Max is his age and GP is buff?
Max is holding his arm, and the shape of his shoulder is all wrong, and it's Kimi's fault— even if Max seems to be weirdly friendly about it all, and he'd caught Kimi out of the sky, how does that work? They'd gone falling through the air, and if Esteban were here he'd probably be able to tell Kimi exactly which comic book character he's thinking of right now, but he can't recall the name.
Max is only a little taller than him, lanky in a way Kimi has only seen before in photos, not grown in the way he remembers. He's got some kind of device around his torso and waist, complicated straps and gleaming metal, but Kimi keeps staring at the black undershirt he's wearing, slightly opaque in the back, enough for him to make out the shift of the muscles along his back as they walk.
Oh, he's fucked up the spell bad. Everyone must be panicking back home, trying to figure out how to get him back. But he seems safe enough, at least for now. GP is a good man as far as he's aware, and he knows he can trust Max.
Max half twists to catch Kimi's eyes, openly curious as he looks him up and down.
"What are you wearing?"
Kimi should be asking him that.
"Team kit, for back home. These are our sponsors."
Max's brows furrow, but it's GP that answers, not missing a stride as he leads them across the paved paths between buildings.
"You’re an athlete?"
Max's eyes light up as he falls into step next to Kimi, watching him in a way he never has before.
"No way. Is that why your neck is like that? What do you do? Is it dangerous?"
The questions are one right after another, not even a pause for air, and Kimi can't help his answering grin.
"I race cars. Very, very fast cars. My neck is trained so that I don't pass out when I'm turning corners."
He pauses, trying not to feel weird about the fact that Max is clearly impressed.
"It is safer now than it used to be. But it's not safe."
Max tilts his head slightly. His hair reminds Kimi of after a race, when they've all got helmet hair, except this time it must be from the wind, and there's a few stray pieces starting to fall across his forehead.
"You don't seem much older than I am though? When did you start?"
Kimi should tell him that he's a driver too. He should, so that he can tell Max that in another world he's a record breaker and an unattainable standard and the face of their sport, that he's everything Kimi is trying so hard to be. He should.
"Ah, I am actually a special case. They changed the rules so that I could enter early, before I was eighteen. I'm nineteen now."
Max extends his good arm, fingers curled in a fist, and Kimi shoves down the small guilt he'd started to feel as he fist bumps him. He's not lying to Max or anything— he's just being selective about what he tells him. It's practically responsible of him.
GP badges them into a building with a medical symbol on the doors, gesturing them both inside.
"Come on, child prodigies. You'll have to leave everyone's expectations outside— you're just injured teenagers in here."
Max ducks under his arm, giving a mock salute with his good hand.
"Yes Warden, loud and clear Warden."
Kimi ducks under his arm shyly, giving him a small smile.
"Thank you, GP."
There's a surprised shift to GP's face, but then something in his eyes softens, and his hand rests lightly on the top of Kimi's hair.
"Take it easy, lad. And don't let Max drag you into anything."
"I heard that!"
------
Max has an anterior shoulder dislocation, assorted bumps and bruises, and a torn rotator cuff. That last bit is a problem— they'll do surgery on it, but he'll be on light weight restrictions for at least six months, and he won't be allowed to grapple for nearly eight unless he gets cleared early.
He sets his "Your Injuries and Expectations" packet on the cot with a sigh, crossing his good arm across his knees and propping his chin on it. Antonelli is surrounded by medical staff on the cot across from him, eyes wide as he's practically drowned in questions. Max catches his gaze and winks as he makes a yapping motion with his hand.
It's a success, because Antonelli's mouth quirks as his shoulders loosen slightly, and he reminds Max a bit less of a terrified rabbit in the grass.
"—and we don't have any open spaces for him,"
One of the white coats sounds nervous, and Max lays his cheek across his forearm with another sigh. The painkillers they gave him for his shoulder are good, but they're not the fun kind where everything's loopy, so he's depressingly clear-headed.
"He can stay with me?"
His offer cuts through the noise as a few of them turn to look at him, some faces more skeptical than others, and he rolls his eyes.
"I'm clearly not going anywhere. And I don't have a roommate, so my dorm has an extra bed in it. You need to run routine observations on him, I'm on house arrest... Quit looking at me like that, I'm capable of having good ideas."
He looks over at GP, who's been quietly leaning against the wall, and the warden makes a considering noise.
"I don't see why not. I'll run it by administration and see what they think."
Max's gaze drifts back over to Antonelli, whose eyes are hopeful, and he grins.
"What do you think, roomie?"
His mouth opens and closes a few times before he gets a word out.
"That would be great."
GP is sending a text on his phone, but he steps out to get a phone call a moment later, and before Max knows it he's in pre-op, signing the consent form and letting them put stickers all over him.
He likes having a double dorm all to himself— but he's more interested in mystery boy. It's a worthwhile sacrifice.
