Perfectly manicured nails gripped the cardboard in her hands tightly as Allison stretched herself to stand on her tip toes. People passed her, brushing her by but she didn't care, didn't dare move in the chance she missed him if she did. He was coming home. He was coming home. Her best friend, her love, her fiance, her Neal was coming home. Even though she had received the call a month ago informing her of his return, Allison still didn't want to believe it until she had him back in her arms. It could be a cruel joke of fate. Instead of him coming off the plane, somebody else would be with a letter for her, stating how sorry they were for her loss. That he had died in that attack as well.
The single thought only made the lump in her throat worse, her nails digging into the decorated cardboard that displayed his welcome home message.
A year. It had been a year since she had felt his touch, felt his kisses, his love. A year since she heard that charming voice, saw those beautiful eyes. A year too long.
When the announcement came through the loudspeakers that the passengers where coming out, Allison tensed. Men and women started to make their way through the people around her, Allison heard the cries of elated joy when families and couples alike where reunited. She tuned it out, dark eyes focused on the entry way. What would he look like? Would he be the same as the night she met him?
She remembered it well. It was Lydia and Sara's annual New Year's party. It had been a good year. Allison had just taken over Argent Arms for her father and the future of the company seemed to have a bright future, hopefully growing from the small family owned company to a larger corporation.
She managed to get away from the craziness of the people around her and made it to the open bar of the ballroom they had rented to host the event. It was then that she saw him for the first time. Blue eyes catching her, a confident smirk that radiated to her from the other side of the bar. He was confident, charming, handsome and he knew it. And when he made it to her, she knew she'd never want to see him walk away from her.
The wait as mere minutes but it felt like an eternity and it allowed Allison to live through their life together. Remembering every memory, good and bad but she caught sight of dark hair and blue eyes, the sign dropped from her grasped and she bolted to him. Arms wrapped around him as she buried her head in his neck, sobbing against him. She kissed him but even as she did so.....it didn't take her much to realize.
Neal wasn't the same man she had known.
