Weekly Blog #10
Canāt believe that Iām graduating next month and I had a busy weekend so I wrote this in kind of a rush. I initially wanted to pay homage but I didnāt have enough time.Ā
I think itās clear that I do enjoy magical realism and with the story written by Tabucci, it was really clear and an interesting read. Iām writing this a bit late after having a long day and going for a 2hr long walk. The description, prose, and world seemed fascinating to think about and the use of letters in the latter half really made it a more interesting read. I honestly would like to try using letters as a way of conveying a story at some point but Iām honestly not sure how that would go. In one of my stories, there are two characters and one is from New York and the other is from another planet. They meet each other through a piloting school in space and become BFFs but instead of the alien hiding on earth, the New Yorker has to fend for herself in space in a sort of reversal of roles. She has a degree of culture shock and her best friend takes it upon himself to accommodate her whenever possible out of respect for her beliefs (i.e. religion) and they talk for hours to share their experiences to strengthen their friendship. I view the two characters as birds of a feather who understand each otherās motivations, religions, and sense of morals but are narrative foils in how they react to specific situations and home backgrounds. I wrote a draft of this last year for my Intro to Creative writing course but I havenāt had a chance to revisit it yet.
