suppose, in a fantasy AU, one of the snicketverse’s character’s power’s source of energy came from the amount of attention they receive, no matter positive or negative. the more attention they garner, the stronger their power grows,

jacques meets quigley, the lone survivor of the quagmire fire. part of triplets, but his triplets are dead. quigley reached monty’s place by tunnels - such vfd connected underworld that he travelled and reached his destination. this kid has a knack for it. even travelling alone, he was able to decipher the codes, follow the not-easy-to-read-unless-u’re-in-on-what-certain-things-mean signs, endure the long tunnels that must have felt depressing. resilient. he looks like someone good at operating alone - possibly works well with others too, amicable and with a sense of humor - but still is someone who can survive alone.
the way he made his way here all by himself, from a different town, on feet, through tunnels and other less discreet places. it’s all pretty impressive. he’s there. eating peaches. reading books. flipping through maps, determined to find out what really happened to his family. see if there has been any news on them, any news of a survivor. he hopes duncan and isadora and mom and dad are alright. loss is painful. so is uncertainty. but the uncertainty fuels him, keeps him going. pushes him forward. uncertainty is all he has now, his drive, to get him what he wants.
jacques sees the uncertainty and the drive, the perseverance that the kid probably doesn’t define himself with, but still. he’s clever - clever enough to make his ways through the dangerous tunnels and get here. understands a lot about maps, probably. he’s young - 13? about so, jacques think. 13’s young, young enough to be optimistic and have hope. young enough to grow. to learn new things. so much potential, youth. 13 is old. old enough to handle difficult tasks. old enough to be doing an apprenticeship, in the earlier days. old enough to go into the edge of the strange forest.
about 13, alone by himself. his triplets may be dead. his parents may be dead. the newspaper said so. he’s smart, resourceful. an asset.
