IL MEDICO DELLA PESTE Le epidemie di peste, nelle tragiche e più o meno frequenti ricorrenze, mietevano vittime a migliaia. Questo curioso abbigliamento, prima ancora che maschera, era considerato dai medici un’indispensabile precauzione. Durante il dissacrante e cinico carnevale veneziano finiva per avere la funzione di esorcizzare, con il riso, dolore e morte.

The plague epidemic, in the tragic and more or less frequent recurrences, claimed victims by the thousands. This curious clothing, even before it was a mask, was considered by doctors to be an indispensable precaution. During the irreverent and cynical Venetian carnival, it ended up having the function of exorcising pain and death with laughter.
