I think I've finally figured what the upside of the Buried is.
Avatars glean some degree of positive emotion from serving their patron. Jane loved her companionship, Gabriel loved his art, Simon loved his freedom, etc. I hadn't been able to think of anything that the Buried could possibly offer someone until today, whereupon I realised that the inability to move is also the inability to change.
The silly fun times can last forever because they're predictable and not subject to disruption from external factors. Lie down in hole, put dirt on top of you, hole does not change, you do not change, comfy safe hole time lasts forever.
