1) Bahorel was born in Verchiel, one of the two major cities closest to the Winter Palace of the Empress in Halamshiral. Being on the Imperial Highway the city is quite busy and it's particularly ripe for landlords squabbling over territorial matters. He lived there until he was 8 years old and it left quite a mark on him, even though he Circle of Montsimmard would become the clearest influence on his personality and ideas. For example, Verchiel is on the border of the Dales, which made Bahorel come in contact with many tales of Dalish clans and folklore.

He feels very Orlesian but all in all he is not interested in politics since he knows he just isn't cut out for it. This excludes him almost entirely from The Game (except for when he's used as a bargaining chip) and leaves few traces of actual patriotism.

9) Joan has quite a clear image he aspires to, even though he hardly thinks it's realistic or even achievable at all. He was brought up on legends and tales of heroes: noble heart, courage and justice, the whole deal. He admires deeply those who can stay true to a code that includes these aspects but he also thinks it's naive and bound to end in tragedy. The closest thing he has to an actual model would be his father: a man who strove to do good and protect his while still acknowledging that the world just isn't fair sometimes and that you need to play dirty to keep yourself afloat sometimes.
