People watching. That’s how Mara Talisien passed her time, especially at night. It was also how she’d find her next meal. She’d duck in and out of night clubs, dance a little, drink a little, and then -- if she was hungry -- lure an unsuspecting human, usually male, away. When she’d had her fill of blood, she’d leave their body in an alley. And that was her plan tonight. 

Except, tonight she was very distractable. Her eyes kept drifting to a dark-haired man in the corner with pale skin. At first, she thought it was her dead brother Nico: when her gaze fell on the stranger she nearly froze. But after studying him for a moment, she dismissed the idea. But she couldn’t stop staring at him, anyway.

The Vladari count among their ancestors the Mordokkians, a warrior race of white-skinned humanoids with fangs. The Mordokkians used to drink the blood of their defeated enemies, as well as hunt victims for blood at night. When they arrived on Shazzar in the late 21st century, they nearly wiped out all of the human and Andari colonists by their night hunting. 

Because of this, the Vladari have constructed a very non-violent culture with emphasis on abstaining from interpersonal violence and consuming flesh. However, if a Vladari undergoes extreme psychological trauma, they become susceptible to their ancestral bloodlust. They will experience it as an extreme craving to drink living blood, and if allowed to prolong, this will cause them to go mad and lose their sense of reason. They will hunt their victims at night to satisfy this hunger.
