Hello!! I was wondering if you have any tips for people wanting to start writeing stuff, im working on a small oc series so ive been messaging a few of my favorite tumbler writers this question so here i am! I seriously love ilyms so much and Victoria is still best girl and i totally would go full gay for her. Hope you grink some water and have a great day!! 😚💞
I have drank water today, thank you! Sorry it took so long for me to get back to you! AHHH glad you love Victoria, I worked really hard on her character!!
That being said, here are some of my tips for writers!
1) Just write what come to mind!
Usually, before I start fic writing I start off with a timed warmup! Where I open an empty doc and write whatever the hell I want. It can be on any topic, from how I’m feeling at the moment, how the weather is, my most current obsession. I usually time myself for 5 to 10 minutes. After that, I read over what I wrote because sometimes you can get some very interesting plots and ideas from that ramble session.
2) Have an Outline
Short fic, series, or a novel; it’s good to have a small idea about how you want things to flow. You can follow the usual story path with Exposition, Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action, then Conclusion. But it doesn’t have to follow that path. Just go with your gut.
2a) Know your main characters and supporting characters!
This ties with tip no. 2. A good way to help with the flow of the story is to write a timeline of events for each of the main characters. That way you can determine who meets who where, what event causes the break in this group or maybe the event in which the love interests meet.Â
3) RESEARCH
If your character has a disability or you need some basic knowledge on a time period or subject, DO RESEARCH!!! It always helps in the long run because it helps the fic/story feel more real and personal. AND PUT PROPER TRIGGER WARNINGS!
4) Characters!
Know who your characters are! Know how they would react in certain situations. Will they be stressed, happy, angry, etc? Would they lash out or be completely calm only for them to break when they’re away from the crowd.
5) It’s okay to lose inspiration
Sometimes you will feel burnt out. Sometimes, your creative juices will not produce anything that you may deem worthy of posting. And that’s okay. This is your story, your writing. Like the characters in your story, you take things at your own pace. Just push the WIP to the side and try to distract yourself with another hobby or maybe work on another prompt.
6) Take a break
When you feel creator burnout, you will feel unmotivated to write. So it’s okay to take a break. Take a walk outside (following the safety procedures), make your favourite drink. Breathe. The world isn’t going to end if you don’t write something.
7) Have fun!
Writing is supposed to be fun. It’s supposed to be your way of portraying the character. I know it can be easy to compare your portrayal of a certain character to another writer. It terrifies me just thinking about it. But think of it like this: Writers are like the conductors of an orchestra. Orchestras can play the same piece over and over, but it’s the conductor that can work with the said orchestra and bring their own interpretation to life.
So get out there, write and bring your characters to life!
