You smell it before you see it. Rain is coming, and the thought alone makes you grin. It’s been so long since you felt rain on your skin, and you crave the sensation.
Rain has always been your escape from the world. It wipes everything clean, and you feel like maybe, just maybe, when it stops, you can start over. Start over your life, start over your day, it doesn't matter. It’s just a clean reset.
You pull up a chair to the window and watch as the grey clouds roll in. Your fingers twitch with excitement as the first drops pound against the window. You wish you could be out running in the rain, but Olivia just got home for the day, and you don't want to miss out on a single moment with her. She has been so busy at work lately that you feel like you haven’t been able to connect with her at all. You can tell how much the time apart has also started to weigh on Olivia, and you don’t want to take that from her.
Yet when droplets begin to race down the window, you can’t rip your gaze from them. In your excitement to watch the rain, you don't notice Olivia standing in the kitchen watching you. She knows that you have loved living with her, but she hasn't seen you this ecstatic about something in weeks. Even as her feet ache and her stomach growls with hunger, she knows she can't pass up this opportunity. So she sneaks away to the bedroom to get ready.
When she comes back out, you are sitting just inside the window that leads to the fire escape. Your hand is extended out, trying to catch the few drops that make their way through the metal. Your legs twitch as if ready to spring at any moment. Olivia can tell you need this desperately, a way to reground yourself in the world.
“Baby,” she calls out gently, trying not to startle you.
You turn around quickly, shutting the window like you were a child caught doing something wrong. When you see what she is wearing, your eyebrows knit in confusion. “Did you get called back into work again?”
“No, we are going to walk in the rain,” she says, smiling as she extends her hand out towards you.
You stand abruptly, curling your fingers through hers.
“Are you serious?” Your smile turns down suddenly as a nervousness takes over your features. “You just got home, we don’t have to go back out.”
“I’m very serious. You look like a kid in a candy shop right now,” she giggles, her hand coming to cup your cheek. “I love you and want to do things that make you happy.”
“You make me happy.”
Olivia grins, leaning in to kiss you. “Well then, good thing that we are going together."
You walk out of the apartment with your fingers curled through Olivia’s hand. The moment you are out the front door, you are pelted with raindrops, but you don't care. For the first time in days, you feel free. You aren't trapped in the apartment, unable to leave because of the sun. You turn your face up to the sky and grin. You let the water rush down your cheeks and soak into your clothes.
Olivia watches you with fascination and a hint of lingering guilt. When she asked you to come move in with her, she had done it so the two of you wouldn’t have to be away from each other anymore. She asked you to move in so she always knew where you were, so she knew you were safe. She didn’t realize the things you had given up as a result. Things that she so often took for granted.
You notice the shift through the bond and glance over at her. The black hood of her raincoat covers most of her curly hair, but you can see a couple of strands that are still soaked. You gently push them back in before you speak.
“Is it too cold? We can go back inside.”
Olivia shakes her head, letting her hands fall to your hips. “No, no. I just…are you sad you don't live in the woods anymore, where you can spend more time outdoors?”
“I miss the outdoors,” you confirm, “but I wouldn't trade more time in the woods for what we have. I get to spend every night curled up against you and wake up seeing your perfect smile.”
Olivia’s cheeks heat at the words. “We could be doing all of those things at your house.”
“My home is with you. That cabin in the woods, as much as I enjoyed the area, was nothing more than a frozen death trap,” you assure her before kissing her forehead. You lean in to whisper in her ear, “Plus, in our house, I get to sleep next to you naked.”
She laughs, then rolls her eyes. She kisses you softly before pulling you down the street. “Come on, baby, let’s go to the park.”
You feel the rain soak through the hoodie you are wearing, but it doesn't stop the grin on your face. You look over at Olivia occasionally, making sure that she is holding up, and every time you look over, she beams back at you. She seems to be enjoying herself, pulling you to jump in puddles with her. When the water splashes around you both, she laughs, and for once, you regret not knowing what Olivia was like when she was younger.
She knows so much about your history, and you feel like you know nothing about hers. From glimpses into her dreams and thoughts, you know it wasn't always easy. Olivia carries a darkness with her, but there is so much overwhelming joy as well. No matter what happens, Olivia always finds a way to come back stronger and better. You wish you had an ounce of her strength.
You pull Olivia underneath the bridge, giving you both a break from the onslaught of rain. You guide her by her hips until her back is against one of the walls. It is only then that her rain jacket’s hood falls back, revealing her dark curls. The wet strands of hair only make the lines of her face more prominent.
Compared to Olivia’s dry appearance, you are absolutely drenched. Your hoodie clings to your chest, and you are sure your shoes are soaked through. You can’t bring yourself to care, though. You were able to play in the rain with the love of your life, and that is all that matters.
Olivia moves her fingers through a couple of wet strands of your hair. “Did I tell you that you look absolutely gorgeous today?”
“I thought that was supposed to be my line,” you giggle, kissing her forehead softly.
Olivia is about to say something, but she shivers, the cold finally catching up to her. You pull her hood back over her hair. “Alright, come on, let's go home.”
“But—” Olivia protests.
You lean in to whisper, “Let me take you home and make you warm.”
She blushes as she lets you pull her towards the apartment.
You and Olivia exit the elevator dripping with water and laughing loudly. The moment you are in the hall, she pushes you against the nearest wall to place kisses along your neck. Your fingers find their way into her hair when someone coughs loudly.
Olivia turns her gaze but keeps her fingers curled into your hip. She smiles when she realises that it is Fin who interrupted the moment. He is waiting outside of her apartment, a case file in hand.
“Are you going to introduce me to your friend or just make me stand here?” He asks sarcastically.
Olivia reaches for your hand, pulling you over to Fin. You do your best to start breathing as he looks you up and down. There is a piece of you that is radiating with nerves. You know from all of Olivia’s stories that Fin is important. In fact, he might be the most important person to her besides you. You desperately hope you don't fuck it up.
“This is my girlfriend, Y/N,” Olivia smiles, squeezing your hand lightly.
Fin extends his hand, and you take it nervously. “I’m Fin, the one who watches your girl, not your girl’s backside.”
You laugh then, immediately relaxing in his presence. “Well, I appreciate it.” You look over lovingly at Olivia. “Someone needs to watch her stubborn ass.”
“Hey!” Olivia protests, shoving you. She is still smiling when she looks at Fin. “Alright, let’s get inside and look at that file.”
Fin follows you both inside his eyes, gently scanning you. From his thoughts that you read, you can tell that he is analysing you. His thoughts linger on the way your eyes switched from forest green to lavender when they lock on him. You curse internally for forgetting that they change when you are around strangers and wish you had been more cautious about their changes.
“Babe, why don't you go shower and get warmed up while Fin and I look over this file?” Olivia asks, and you realise she is covering for the fact that you are standing there, soaked without even shivering.
“Don't have too much fun,” you tease, leaning over to kiss her temple to hide the embarrassment that is attempting to claw its way up your throat.
You wander to the bathroom, throwing all your wet clothes over the tub before turning on the water. You don't get under it, just let it run while you get into sweatpants and an oversized hoodie. You brush your hair to fix the sopping mess the rain turned it into. You finally decide to put it up in a bun just to keep it out of the way. When you feel you have kept up the act long enough, you turn off the water and wander back to the living room. Olivia and Fin are at the kitchen counter, pictures spread across the open space, deep in conversation.
You don't intrude, just flick on the game system that Olivia got you to help you pass some time while she is working. You log into your game, prepared to zone out and try not to overhear how they found another body near your old home when you hear a low whistle behind you. You smell Fin before you see him lean over the back of the couch, the side of his face visible in your peripheral vision.
“You're the highest rank support I have seen. You ever duo queue?”
You turn to look at him with excitement. “You play? I have been trying to get Liv to play but,” you lean in to whisper, “she isn't good.”
“I heard that,” she calls from the kitchen.
“I love you baby,” you respond before mouthing absolutely horrible to Fin.
Fin laughs, standing back up. “Let me get my PlayStation and I'll be back.”
Olivia crosses her arms with a look of disbelief. “Are you really going back to your apartment for your PlayStation?”
“No, I'm going down to my car,” he winks. “I always come prepared.”
While he goes downstairs, Olivia plops down next to you with a plate of leftover food you had made her the night before. She kisses your cheek before taking a bite of food.
“You and Fin seem to be getting along,” she points out.
You lay your head on her shoulder, humming in agreement. “He is important to you, which means that he is important to me too.”
You feel Olivia’s happiness swell through the bond, and you smile before leaning up to kiss her neck softly. Her pulse quickens under your touch, and you scrape your teeth across her skin lightly. She lets out a soft rush of air before the door opens.
You help Fin set up his PlayStation while Olivia finishes her food. When everything is organised, she curls herself up on the couch next to you with a book in her hand. Fin watches the way she pulls a blanket around you both and softens when you kiss her forehead.
“You know, Liv, I haven’t seen you this relaxed and smiley since Elliot was here,” Fin comments while he boots up his game.
Olivia stiffens at the comment for a moment, her heart aching at the thought of Elliot. You know of him faintly from dipping into her dreams sometimes, but you don’t know the extent of their relationship. You want to ask, but know now isn’t the right time. You merely place your hand in Olivia’s, who squeezes it.
She turns to look at you with a broad grin that makes you want to pull her to the bedroom. She leans up to place a soft kiss on your jawline. “It’s easy to be relaxed around her. Y/N makes everything better.”
“I love you,” you whisper.
“Not nearly as much as I love you,” she responds.
“Alright, love birds, at least let me play a couple of games with your girl before you start trying to take her clothes off,” Fin cuts in.
Olivia laughs, turning her attention back to her book. You kiss the top of her head before picking up your controller. You grin at Fin. “Alright, old man, let’s see what you got.”

Olivia gives up waiting for you and Fin to be done playing and instead pushes your arms up until she can slide a pillow and her head on your lap. She pulls a blanket around her and then nuzzles herself close enough that her nose brushes your stomach. In between rounds, you lean down to kiss her forehead.
“Is this you telling me I need to be done?” You ask softly.
“No, you are having fun. I just want to be close,” she murmurs. “Keep playing, I like hearing you happy.”
You give her another soft kiss before turning your attention back to the game. Within a couple of minutes, she is fast asleep. Fin looks over at her, curled against you, letting a faint smile cross his lips.
“You really care about her,” he notes softly.
“More than anything in the whole world,” you admit.
“I knew something had to have changed. She was in a really dark place for a while, but now…now she laughs like she used to,” Fin says, his eyes clouding for a moment. He shakes his head momentarily to regain his composure. “Thank you for bringing my friend back.” He turns to the game. “Now we play till loss, or you pass out. Whichever comes first.”
You laugh at the fact that he has no idea of your inability to pass out like humans before focusing back to the TV. And with how good of a player you are, it would likely be a while before the two of you lost. Still, you find yourself grinning as you reply, “Challenge accepted.”
