 So if I like math so much, why am I ecstatic to be out of math?  I don’t mind working under pressure and I don’t mind working hard, but if I’m going to be under this kind of constant pressure, I might as well leave teaching and go earn what I’m worth in the marketplace.  

 When I go back into science next year, I won’t work any less than I do now.  In fact I expect next year to work even longer hours than normal because I’ll be teaching two different science curriculum.  Math is relatively easy subject to plan classes for, a very easy subject to grade, and it’s not like math changes too much in middle school.  The standards change, programs change, etc, but math is math.  For me, Science prep is far more involved, grading is far more difficult and time consuming, and keeping up with the changes in the scientific world is not an easy undertaking.  

 But teaching science to middle school students is SO much more enjoyable.  I act like a trained monkey in math class to try to keep students’ attention.  From the anonymous surveys I give my students, I know they enjoy my class, but I still look out upon a sea of faces that look like they are in a waking coma.  Kids hear from their parents that, “I never liked math.  I was never good in math. Etc.”  Many kids are pre-programmed to bring these attitudes into the class.  Then throw in years of high pressure standardized tests and…take my subject please.

 Let’s turn to science. Fun labs?  Check.  Chemicals? Check.  Flame? Check.  Cool videos?  Check. Less coma faces?  CHECK.  Standardized tests in science?  Not so much.

 Is their pressure when I teach science?  If one wants to do a good job, there is always pressure, but it’s pressure that isn’t generated from some smoke and mirrors algorithm that no one can explain. It’s not pressure caused by some test my students have to do well on, even if they come into my 6th or 7th grade class and they still can’t tell which is an even, or odd, number.  It’s not pressure that’s generated because one year my “value add” score can rate me as a superstar and the next year my “value add” score can state I’m a super loser. Same teacher, same effort, same skill set applied, yet vastly different scores- sure that makes sense.

I read all the time how a school should be run just like a private business. I’m told I should provide “value”.  I’m actually given a “value added” statistical rating that determines whether I’m a good teacher.  This rating is based on a single test on a single day and the statistical model is proprietary opaque and seems to change annually in order to make the “data” fit.

While I still have more experience in the private sector than the public, I thought I would imagine what my classroom would be like, if I really ran it like my sales territory.  Blogs are inherently narcissistic, so I guess if I tell you that I was a very good sales person that only makes this exercise slightly more narcissistic.  I feel I need to let you know I was good at my previous career to lend some kind of credibility to my analysis.

 So if I ran my classroom like my territory I would: 

1.  Concentrate on the students who gave me the greatest chance at success.  Just about every sales territory is built with some low hanging fruit and some real challenges.  The low hanging fruit are a great way to get easy success and pad the commission check.  The challenging prospects may never buy from you.  Challenging prospects take time, sometimes years to gain traction.  So goodbye students who might take longer than 6 months to see results that will help my value add scores.  The students who can’t help me with my goals will now sit somewhere in my room completing worksheets while I cultivate my low hanging fruit.

2.  Crush the competition.  I was a competition killer.  It became my specialty.  I would go into accounts that didn’t use my company, perhaps didn’t even like my company, and I would beat my competition to gain their business.  Within the value add system, my competitors are my fellow math teachers.  With the value add system we are stacked ranked.  The details are public record and nobody wants to be ranked at the bottom.  So goodbye cooperation, collaboration, and coworkers!   You are on your own.  I would be fired were I to collaborate with my competition in the private sector.  Cooperating with my business competitors would have hurt my wallet and my career.  Cooperating with my teacher competitors might raise their scores and make them look better than me.

 3.  Strive to accomplish only what I’m judged to accomplish.  When I was in the private sector, I knew exactly what to do to be considered highly effective; get sales and lots of them.  Sure there were other goals, but you could be great at the other goals and still get fired if you didn’t sell enough.  Everyone knew the salesperson that brought in a ton of money for the company, did everything else wrong, but still got top billing in the office.  So teaching my curriculum will take a back seat to teaching successful test strategies.  I don’t really need to teach my students for the long-term.  I only need to teach my students enough to show growth RIGHT NOW!  I would have a laser focus on the test and only the test because a laser focus is how I succeed in business.

 4.  Incentive my prospects to be “successful”.  No one works on intrinsically motivating sale’s prospects.  After all in business “it’s the bottom line baby!”  I won’t spend anymore time trying to develop long-term intrinsic motivations in my students.  I will ply them with incentives.  I used to take my prospects to dinners, golfing, etc.  Students are much cheaper to incentivize, a little candy here, a little on-line game there and I have one grateful “prospect”.

 5.  Once the sale is over, it’s time to move on.  If a client in the business world has no future value then, ”bye-bye client”.  In my private sector classroom, once the standardized tests are over so is my need for my student prospects.  It’s time to get ready for the new crop next year.  I think a lot of movie watching will take place in my classroom while I plan for my new prospect base.
