Preying on the naive or why cold-callers SUCK ASS OR how being lazy saved my identity.
So....I was targeted today by a cold caller. Told me that my computer was hacked. Asked me to download a program to show me the problems. I did. I fell for it. BUT, thankfully, my computer is used mostly as a tool for entertainment. I conduct anything resembling business on a different computer if I do it at all. And lately I haven’t been. Thank GOD, otherwise, some of my information may have been made visible to the douchebag who called me or worse yet. I may have been suckered into handing over valuable financial information, and suffer a financial blow that I could NEVER recover from in my current state of employment. Luckily, I have wiser adults in my life who were able to see the signs I did not. Eventually, my suspicions were finally aroused when the so-called “tech support” began to call me repeatedly and when they started to install a program onto my computer without my knowledge. Unfortunately, I wasn’t quick enough to shut the computer down to lock them out before the program was installed. BUT, I did shut the computer off due to my gut feeling finally catching up with me and realizing some shady crap was going down. Confirming this was when the second my computer was shut off, “Dell”, the company I was ALREADY ON THE PHONE WITH, was repeatedly trying to call me back. I did a scan of my computer with my installed security program and found nothing, but not after I deleted all of the installed program that I could. Its current state is a dead icon on my computer that won’t go away, so I have no idea whether I’m safe or not. As a precaution, my home computer has become a strictly “for fun” tool, and no business will be conducted on it until I am 100% sure I am safe.
Moral of the Story: do NOT trust anyone who says they’re from a computer, technology, government or company who should have your information already, with information they pressure you to give them. These companies do not call YOU, YOU call THEM. So...be careful or you will get screwed over...royally.
