(Sorry this took so long to answer!)

I don’t have a good synopsis, but here’s the basic idea:

Sorrel and Braeburn are best mates, and they like to spend their days exploring the low, safe hills outside of their underground home, Warren. One day, while Braeburn’s younger sister Perennial is tagging along, they wind up in a spot of trouble that drags them far away from their sheltered lives. As they try to get back, they collect new friends into their group, including the high elf scholar Larelwythn and the laidback forest elf who calls himself Leaf. They face many dangers, learn many new tricks, and see more of the world than any Warren burra they have ever known.

Every now and again a kid wants the same affinity as a parent/older sibling/friend/etc and ends up with something different, but it’s actually pretty rare. (A Word of God secret: Affinities are mostly a choice and totally changeable, but tradition has wiped out that knowledge to the point that any records of people changing affinities are dismissed out of hand. Shifting used to be a far more malleable ability.) 

Usually a kid isn’t disappointed until they get to school and other kids start making fun of them for it. Cari used to hate that her affinity is a wolverine (they’re smelly and not exactly pretty and graceful...why couldn’t she have been something respectable, like a wild horse?), but she decided to lean into it instead of allowing people to judge her for it.
