Recently I purchased a Valeton GP-5, a multi-effects processor for guitar. It has been getting a lot of buzz lately for being able to cheaply utilize NAM captures (modeling of guitar amplifiers and cabinets), but I mainly wanted to use it as an inexpensive way to experiment with effects I don't have, and more easily add them to recordings.
Although I've found the software buggy, and more times than not the sound has a "cocked wah" tone to it (I wonder if the default EQ doesn't mesh well with my headphones), so far it's been useful. I've mainly been using it as a practice tool, playing alongside its drum machine. Its Boss DS-1 modeling sounds pretty similar to a real one, and I've enjoyed testing effects I don't have, such as a Fuzz Face and tape delay.
One thing I have noticed, however, is it exacerbates the issue the guitar community has of caring about sound over playing. If you poke around its Facebook Group you'll see quite a few people asking how to get very specific tones that are the hallmarks of various famous musicians. When I started playing, the cost of this "every sound you can think of in one pedal" thing could only get you one effects pedal. So you learned to deal with simple sounds, slowly adding to them as you improved and acquired more cash.
I'm all for using your heroes to help achieve a result. The issue is that people get caught up in that process, obsessing over sounding exactly like that other guitarist, rather than using the essence of that sound as a tool to inspire their own playing.
