On Surplus Gas Masks (namely, the GP-5)

Howdy y’all, just thought I’d make a quick post to discuss something I see far too often in the prepper community. Although I want to keep this blog as distanced from prepper culture as I can, I can’t help that our interests overlap.

Anyways, I understand as a collector of gas masks that military surplus is the best source. That being said, the Soviet GP-5 mask is well-known for having asbestos in its filter. This isn’t to say the GP-5 mask itself is dangerous, and in fact, it’s possible to get a new filter (such as a NATO filter) and make it safe. I just don’t know how many know of this issue, but I do know I see a LOT of people wearing GP masks.

Please be careful with military surplus. If you are unsure about something, google is your friend, and if you can’t find an answer, contact the supplier themselves. It’s far better to be safe than sorry.
