Atobe Keigo

I have a feeling the whole idea sprung on when Atobe was working on building a festival that happened to occur around Valentine’s Day. Experimenting with certain music – seeing music that is popular of the time of year is important, so he likely went on search for popular music of the month – finding Valentine music to be the cake. Becoming amused with this, and being the proud male he is, decided that it would be a grand idea to sing a Valentine song, searching for the perfect one, he found it in Valentine Kiss. As the king, he’d surely take the show. But, being alone on stage, being the only one to bother, well that wasn’t a fun concept. It would oh so much more amusing to convince others to join him.

Also, I just want to say that at this festival or wherever the performances actually happened, he would be sitting in a throne… that was made last minute by his servants and team out of the boxes of chocolate he got and a cushion. Because he certainly would not accept an unconfortable throne.

Oshitari Yuushi and Mukahi Gakuto

So, Atobe didn’t really pick Oshitari to ask first… (Akutagawa was asleep, and would take very long to learn the song – I think he could possibly ask Akutagawa in the future! - and he knew Kabaji would take backup vocals) but, well, Oshitari seemed like a good candidate in the end. And he sort of overheard Atobe’s plans and asked to know more. One that would, well, possibly add something. And his singing voice – Atobe had heard it a few times before – was quite the tolerable one. At first, there was this whole exchange:

“Oh, so Atobe needs my help, hmm?”

“Ore-sama simply wants you to learn the song and perform as a festival. I expect it of you.”

“Can’t run solo?”

“Oshitari, you will do it.”

I honesly think Atobe probably was able to convince Oshitari simply because these are the kinds of things Oshitari seems to rather enjoy. Such a romantic oriented song – it was an interesting way to have a story to tell.

Mukahi overheard Atobe’s and Oshitari’s conversation and swore to himself that he wouldn’t do it but then he felt a presence behind him and found himself being carried over to Atobe by Kabaji where Atobe told him he was going to perform it too and he kept refusing and never gave a straight answer but he heard it so much around the area because of practically everyone practicing that he learned the song and was pushed on stage at the end and while he did end up trying, he kind of didn’t want to and was never convinced fully. (He had put on the hoodie pre-performances because he saw it and it was an ~extra~ and he thought it was comfortable.)

Shishido Ryou and Ootori Choutarou

Shishido’s reaction to it on the initial was similar to Tezuka’s certain reaction – “No!” The thing is with Shishido, he had to deal with Atobe asking him about it every day. Why would Atobe be so insistent? Well, his team has to listen to him. I think… in how Atobe convinced him to do it was a lot of asking – where he eventually decided to background Oshitari’s alongside Ootori – was really based on how he was able to bring Ootori along on the singing.

When he actually sang backup in Yuushi’s performance, some of the girl’s heard his singing and literally called and called for “Shishido-kun(/Shishido-senpai) to sing the song soon too so Shishido gave in because there was no getting around that but like, he glared at Atobe, frowned, called the whole thing lame, and still refused to wear the hoodie.

For Ootori himself, he was asked rather calmly by Atobe and while getting awkward and shifting his feet, Ootori asked Atobe why he should try it and Atobe made his explanation simple and Ootori concluded that it would be a good way to thank everyone for the presents he would get for Valentine’s Day and his birthday and agreed on it. He also thought it would just be a nice thing to do.

Sanada Genichirou and Niou Masaharu

Resident occasional watcher of Kirihara got a pass at coming over one day and just completely interrupting practice. Okay, so, he probably would’ve dropped by anyway, but that time Yukimura knew of his coming and so casually hinted at it.

And when Atobe made the offer of Sanada singing, spurring something about how the king was letting the lower emperor have a spot light and that just annoyed Sanada and Sanada had responded with something about how it would be embarrassing and the notion was obsurd.

But Yukimura looked at Sanada and said, “Sanada, I do think you would have fun. You should try it.”

Now, Sanada was going to refuse but then Kirihara and Marui ended up dropping something, so he had to excuse himself to go yell at them and Yagyuu came out, disguised as Sanada and Niou followed suit and they agreed for Sanada. And then the real Sanada came back, only to find Atobe gone and Yukimura holding a CD and a lyric sheet, “For you, Genichirou.”

And so, Sanada awkwardly began to learn the song.

Niou, however, overheard the idea from Sanada’s and Atobe’s conversation and decided he wanted to join in simply because it seemed really interesting and he figured it would be a way to see amusing reactions from different people and he was bored and decided on a whim to give it a shot. He was reminded multiple times by Yagyuu to actually learn the track – this could be why they appear as guest vocals on Sanada’s version as well.

Oishi Shuichiro and Kikumaru Eiji

Oishi was approached by Atobe after the failed attempt at getting Tezuka to join in. Now, Oishi didn’t particular want to do it at first – there was a whole time issue and well, Oishi felt like he would’ve been awkward just doing it – which he ended up really being. But Atobe came anyway, and suggested that it would be a good thing and left it at that. Oishi wasn’t particularly convinced, but that was where Kikumaru bopped in.

“Nya~ Oishi! It sounds fun, doesn’t it?”

“Eiji, what about practice?”

“Oh…”

And then Atobe mentioned how there were other doubles partners doing it and Kikumaru immediately turns to Oishi and says, “If you’ll do it, I’ll do it.” And they both agreed but Kikumaru got more into it and actually wore the hoodie and immediately had mini-competitions with Mukahi.

Kai Yuujirou and Kite Eshirou

Quite honestly, I think Atobe went up to Kite and basically told him that he could design the outfit they wore because Kite can sometimes be an ~aspiring~ fashion designer. So, Kite decided on this hoodie-white pants combo with different colors for everyone and then Kite told Kai that he’d have fun and that he could sing the song and he did.

Then Atobe basically said that Kite should will sing too and Kite agreed so it really wasn’t difficult to convince them.

Hiyoshi Wakashi

“If you are to be the next true leader of Hyoutei, you must sing, Hiyoshi.”

“I will outdo you at singing then.”

And then Atobe said with a chuckle, “The winner will be me.”

And so Hiyoshi had basically already agreed before Atobe asked him, and he made it into a competition, but he really wants to show that he can do just what his seniors can. And then he receives a comforting pat from Ootori and a smile and Ootori whispers, “We can easily beat them, can’t we, Hiyoshi-kun?”

And then Hiyoshi decided the best way to win was to have fun and he knew he’d beat “Mukahi-san” easily or something. At least, he was very convinced he would.

Saeki Kojirou

“People would love to hear you sing, Saeki.”

“Oh? I guess I could spare some time.” Was Saeki response but he really didn’t have much scheduled. He’s one of those people that likes making others happy (and poking fun at them) so he decided to go ahead and sing this with the rest of Rokkaku because, as they are basically a family, they do things together~.

Fukushi Michiru

“I’ll be known world-wide!”

“Ah~n? I would go as far to say that. Perhaps you’ll be known by a few more people.”

“Ginka will be respected!”

And then Atobe questioned why he even bothered talking to this captain but then Fukushi got stressed out and probably drank something bad before singing it (everytime!) and wouldn’t actually show his face to the crowd.

Shiraishi Kuranosuke

It wasn’t hard to convince Shiraishi. The whole idea honestly amused Shiraishi quite a bit, and of course, all of Shitenhouji (minus Zaizen, who probably was writing down parts of the conversations in a notebook so he blog about it later) instantly agreed! So, Atobe talked to Shiraishi and Shiraishi decided it sounded like the perfect idea and he got really into it. And there was some “Why does Shiraishi and Yuushi get to do it, can’t I?” from Kenya.
