It's long I'm sorry, but I'm not okay.
So Cleric (Sarge) and Rogue (Charlie) both avoided one another.
Sarge filled our ship with bodies and used a lot of gentle reposes, intent on spending all his spell slots over the next few days reviving everyone he could.
The yak child no longer had a skull and could not be brought back. Sarge and Valdot bury him.
Valdot, 10 Int /8 Wis barbarian that solves problems with threats and swords, is the one encouraging him to talk to Charlie.
Trauma-buddies moment happens. Valdot talks about his childhood. Sarge mentions the war crimes he's seen.
We bring the one survivor back to her home and she offers to help Sarge bring folks back. Also lets us know the yakfolk had plans to infiltrate and enslave a nearby dwarf city. Sarge decides to stay.
No one in the party stops him.
Valdot tries one last time to get him and Charlie to talk, and failing that, gets a hug from Sarge. In the most sincere he's been with the party Valdot gives one last try- "I would really rather you stay. You are my favorite afterall, darling."
Sarge hands him a small bundle and leaves.
It's a holy symbol of Helm and a fresh cigar. This is fine. I'm fine. (I'm not)
"Oh one more thing, Charlie." Valdot in his chipper, Hollywood diva voice, "If you ever kill another child infront of me, I will put you in the ground. And unlike Sarge I don't pull my punches........ but otherwise we're good, love 😘 "
I OOC find out Sarge was a Watcher of the Fallen, preist of Helm, abandoned by the lord he fought for, captured after witnessing everything from child soldiers, to slaves, to wholesale slaughter, all in the name of money. He was tortured not for information but for amusement, and left for dead. He gave up on his god, feeling broken and abandoned, and hasn't prayed since. He no longer knows where his divine powers come from and wanders, trying to do good where he can.
Sarge is a man barely holding the last shreds of himself together, aware he is broken and resigned to it. I am reminded of when Valdot cheekily asked the Giant Oracle what Sarge's greatest fear was. He expected something silly like Spiders but was told "Getting close to people, only to lose them. Again."
If the party did not have confirmed information and a potential direct link to the place Valdot is searching for, he would have stayed with Sarge. He is not sure if he regrets it. Still fine. Yup. I'm not crying you're crying.
We return to the yak village. Sarge's weapon lays in the dirt where he dropped it next to Charlie's head. Now wearing the holy symbol (with a bunch of other trinkets and baubles like usual) Valdot takes it without the party noticing.
We get back to giant hunting. Meet a new trio (including New PC) of Drow, rebelling against the Matriarch and very naive of the surface. New PC can call angels and has some cool scimitars. Valdot likes their style, and feels kinship with the angel and doesn't know why. He's guessing it's Aasling Things.
