The Kanohi Vahi, the mask of time. The most underwhelming of the three legendary Kanohi masks. I decided to borrow some ideas from another post I saw once, one I sadly can't find any more at the moment. But basically:
The Vahi was created to reverse major catastrophes in the Matoran Universe. When the Great Spirit notices the beginnings of a horrible event, he implants the instructions for the Kanohi Vahi into a great mask maker, who then creates the mask and keeps it safe at all costs. When the dominoes fall and the catastrophe has occurred, someone is meant to use the power of the Vahi.
The moment it is activated, the Vahi will cause time to tick backwards, only stopping when the mask unmakes its own creation and no longer exists to keep reversing the flow of time. Whoever used the mask will remember what happened and know how to reverse the catastrophe. They are then instructed with hiding the great disks of which the Vahi is made of.
After the fall of the Great Spirit Robots and the reformation of Spherus Magna, the Toa Nuva slowly lead several Great Beings back to the small settlement, in which many beings had gathered. The Order of Mata Nui had begun to collect itself there, together with the leaders of Metru Nui, only enhancing the dreams of the settlers. That one day this collection of bare bones huts and outposts might become a New Metru Nui, more glorious than the former one. The Toa also had to face the truth about their makers. That much like every other god that had ever graced or threatened the Matoran Universe, they too were just frauds. Agori gone mad with cosmic knowledge, turned scientists with god-complexes. Many of them had even grown hostile towards their own creations.
Luckily, the Great Being after which the Matoran word for "mask" was named, Kanohi, was one of the friendlier scientists. But still he was beyond surprised to learn that the recent anomalies in time, were apparently caused by tempering with the Kanohi Vahi.
It felt like it had only been weeks since the death of Makuta and departure of Mata Nui, yet knowing the clock reveals it has been quite a lot longer. Because for a span of six years, time kept running but allowed no progression. As everyone and everything was frozen in place with no feeling of time as only the seconds and minutes were allowed to keep moving. And even after this strange time had ended, things only got worse. As now on rare occasions, portals to a timeless realm between reality opened and closed. A gate through which one could gaze and enter into copies of the past. A realm not to different from what Vakama described the universe would become if the Vahi were broken.
These glitches in the fabric of time are a result of Voporak, the beast that stole the Vahi, tempering with the mask. Trying to alter it, to "fix" it.
Becaue the Vahi in it's current form is not complete.
When Mata Nui noticed the sickness he and the Universe within him were succumbing to, it was already far too late to reverse it. The virus had already been in motion for hundreds of years. It was no longer possible to reverse it. Instead, Mata Nui spoke to Toa Lhikan, and planned out a team of Toa to save the Matoran, the heart of Metru Nui, and to keep them safe and out of the reach of Makuta, while they waited for the Toa Mata to awaken and the gears of destiny to bring them to awakening the Great Spirit once more.
To guide and help them, he gave Vakama the instructions to Create the Kanohi Vahi, but not the same one from the legends. This was a weaker, Great version of the Vahi. One that could slow time to a near halt, but not reverse it. But also one that would last in their hands, rather than unmaking itself.
When Kanohi and his cursed brother figured this out, they immediately retracted any reluctant praise they gave to Vakama for creation the mask and instead started to belittle his mask making abilities. They created the Toa Nuva stones, which turned the Turaga Metru into upgraded Toa, and sent them to retrieve the Great Kanohi Vahi.
They were later forced to recognise Vakama at being even greater of a mask maker than they had thought, even greater than Kanohi himself, when Vakama returned from his timey wimey adventure with not only the Vahi, but a second mask made from the great disks, taken from the past. This being a great mask of space, built to be worn at the same time as the Vahi, together creating a Legendary Mask of Space-Time. This mask not only held powers over space and more powers over time than ever before, but it also stabilised its own existence to prevent itself from ever reversing its own creation.
With this mask, that the Great Being thought would never be possible, Vakama undid the damage caused by Voporak and cemented his place in history as the greatest Mask Maker of all time.
