          strange,  the  way  even  the  most  tender  words  can  be  so  crushing.  a  sobering  reminder  that  her  existence  is  ultimately  inconsequential;  the  pair’s  unlikely  bond  a  mere  footnote  in  the  epic  poem  of  his  life.  a  life  that  would  continue  long,  long  after  she  was  just  a  distant  memory.  heart  swells  and  chest  tightens,  affectionate  yet  morose.  silence  drags  on  a  beat  longer  as  dark  eyes  carefully  sweep  his  face,  ensuring  it’s  committed  to  her  memory  (  as  if  she  could  ever  forget  him,  not  with  how  she’d  grown  to  care  for  him  in  spite  of  herself  ).  “  i’m  sure  you  say  that  to  all  your  little  helpers,  ”  she  starts  airily,  but  a  smirk  tugs  at  the  corner  of  her  mouth.  “  not  like  i’ll  have  a  clue  whether  you  still  remember  me  in  a  century  or  not  anyway.  ”
