8. Usurp
To usurp the crown
One's nature must break in two.
One's head from One's neck.

Day 8 of @downwithwritersblock 's october challenge. Yeah, I went with a haiku, but I had a work shift, wrote a whole fanfic, and knitted a hat, so I think I earned a little break (in this challenge that no one is holding me to but myself). But today would've been one of those days were I decide to put it off, then I never finish the challenge, so I'm glad I got anything up, honestly
Imagine, when Loki returns to Asgard after faking his death, he tries to surprise Odin and usurp the throne, hoping to banish him to Midgard as Odin did with Thor. But Odin has long recognized Loki as a potential threat – possibly his real reason for locking him away in the dungeons – and is ready. As Loki tries to strip Odin of his powers, Odin puts all of his energy into one last spell. Before falling to Earth, Odin fixes Loki’s appearance so that he is stuck as ‘Odin’ and can no longer transform himself to resemble anyone else.
Loki soon discovers what’s happened when he tries and fails to return to his own usual form. To begin with it’s fine, it gives the ruse authenticity. But as time goes on Loki finds disadvantages of having a body several thousand years older than he’s used to, not least his attractiveness. As Odin, he only gets attention from power-hungry gold-diggers. What’s more, he will never be credited with any of his deeds as ruler of Asgard, Odin will.  Odin who is off on Midgard, while Loki does all the work but is considered dead.  It gets to be too much, so Loki tries to find a way to tell the truth and ascend to the throne officially, but he has already honored his own ‘heroic loss’ and without being able to change his looks the lie is difficult to undo.Â
Finally, he confesses to Thor. But Thor concludes that his father, driven mad by guilt over Loki, is finally losing it. Reluctantly Thor decides to take the throne himself and Jane suggests that Odin should be put somewhere safe where he can be cared for. Loki once more finds himself virtually imprisoned.
Who can he convince? Heimdall knows everything of course. He’s been reporting to Loki on the real Odin’s trials on Earth, where by now he’s finally gotten a job making sandwiches in a diner and seems to coping quite well, one might say enjoying the break…
Heimdall thinks Loki’s made his bed and should lie in it for a while. He’ll tell Thor the truth when he’s ready. But he will help Loki go to Midgard to let him try to convince Odin to reverse the spell, which should make good watching. So Loki, still looking just like Odin, travels Midgard to see his ‘long lost twin brother’ the Sandwich Chef with whom he must reconcile.
Tldr: Odin pulls a Howls Moving Castle on Loki and forces him to remain looking like Odin
