Yesterday was a tragic day. A set of remains were positively identified as one of the 43 students who disappeared in late September in Guerrero, Mexico. The remains were found burnt in the middle of a landfill. With it, it can only be assumed for now that the rest of the students are not to be found alive.
For those who have not been following this: The 43 students were kidnapped by police officers under the order of Jose Luis Abarca, mayor of Iguala, Guerrero - now a fugitive as well as his wife. The State and Federal government response to the situation was deficient. People from Ayotzinapa -the hometown of these students- as well as from neighboring towns and Humans Rights organizations started to look for the bodies of the students on their own. By doing so, they uncovered dozens of bodies in mass illicit graves, however none of the remains were the students'.
Meanwhile, many protests were organized nationwide. People asked for justice for this case. Many other cases that until now are unsolved also resurfaced, including a pre-K that was set on fire, killing dozens of infants. The government's response to these manifestations have been the following:
-A promise that the authorities will do their best to solve this crime.
-The General prosecutor declaring he was tired of listening of this case.
-The police officers using excessive force on protestors.
-The approval of a law that will criminalize protests. (Clear violation of freedom of speech).
-The president stating that the country has been going through tough times, but we should all get over it and move on.
In addition to that, a recent discovery of a house owned by the first lady, valued in around 6.3 million dollars (not pesos). The woman argues that this house has been paid by her years working as an actress for tv. Making her the best paid actress in the country. Even better paid than Salma Hayek.
