I saw a touring production of A Strange Loop. It’s quite a musical. I loved it. It had a lot to say.
The audience was full of old white people and while it’s good that they’re heard its messages, I feel like it’s not something they’re going to really appreciate. Not a lot of black people which is not surprising because musical theatre is definitely becoming for more and more for privileged/lucky people.
Hell, there’s a line where one of his thoughts (as a person he runs into on the subway) asks Usher if he’s seen Hamilton. And Usher, “No. I’m poor.” The other guy goes, “That’s valid. I only saw it because I’m fucking the guy playing King George.”
Lots to ponder on. I’m glad that this musical won best musical in 2022. I’m sad that it’s not on Broadway anymore.
The old white lady next to me did not like it one bit. After every other song, she would do a thumbs down while everyone else clapped. I think during bows she did it again and shouted, “I didn’t like the songs!” It was hilarious. Obviously, she signed up for like a season pass or something and did not do any research or anything. And why would she? She probably assumes that all musicals that she sees are gonna be like fucking Annie or Carousel.
I’m honored to have seen this musical.
