Sometimes, as in the sentence about Mary, we can figure out what the writer means, but in many instances, dangling modifiers can cause confusion or misinterpretation of the writer's message. Consider this example:

Hungry for attention, the dog became Mary’s best friend.

If the writer here means that the dog was hungry for attention, then this sentence conveys that meaning successfully. But what if the writer means that Mary is the subject of this opening phrase? Imagine a young girl, in want of attention, who obtains said attention from her canine companion. How do we write that sentence? In other words, how do we fix this dangling modifier?

First, ask yourself who or what is being modified by the phrase “hungry for attention.” In this case, it’s Mary. However, Mary is not the grammatical subject. To correct the error, we need to add the subject immediately following its modifier, like so:

Hungry for attention, Mary…

Then, we can rewrite the rest of the sentence to say what Mary did, whether that's befriending a dog or participating in theater.

The American Heritage Dictionary lists two meanings for the phrase beg the question:

To assume to be true what one is purporting to prove in an argument.

To call to mind a question in a discussion; invite or provoke a question.

If you are a language stickler, you may be stomping your feet and yelling WRONG at sense 2. The first, more traditional, sense is often described as the only proper meaning of the phrase. But in actual practice, the second sense is quite widespread. Widespread is one thing; acceptable is another. Thanks to the Usage Panel, we’ve been able to determine how acceptable the second sense is to a representative group of careful writers. We balloted the Panel in 2013 and presented the results in a new Usage Note:

Historically, logicians and philosophers have used the phrase beg the question to mean “to put forward an argument whose conclusion is already assumed as a premise.” Usually, when people beg the question in this sense, the conclusion and the assumed premise are put in slightly different words, which tends to obscure the fact that such an argument is logically meaningless. For instance, to argue that caviar tastes better than peanut butter because caviar has a superior flavor is to beg the question—the premise that is taken as given (that caviar’s flavor is superior) is essentially identical to the point it is intended to prove (that caviar tastes better). But since at least the early 1900s, laypeople have been using beg the question in slightly different senses, to mean “raise a relevant question” or “leave a relevant question unanswered.” When used in these senses, beg the question is usually followed by a clause explaining what the question in question is, as in That article begs the question of whether we should build a new school or renovate the old one or The real estate listing claims that the kitchen is spacious, which begs the question of what “spacious” means. These senses of beg the question are so well established that they have nearly displaced the original sense in everyday usage, but they are still often frowned on by traditionalists, especially those with training in philosophy; in our 2013 survey, the sentences above were judged acceptable only by slim majorities of the Usage Panel—55 and 58 percent, respectively. By contrast, a sentence using the phrase in its original sense (When I asked him why we must protect every endangered species regardless of the cost, he said it was because every species is priceless, but that just begs the question) was considered acceptable by 79 percent of the Panel. The newer senses of beg the question will probably continue to flourish because “begging a question” suggests “begging for,” or “raising” a question. However, this broader usage will also probably continue to draw the ire of philosophers and others who use the "circular reasoning" sense of the term, for which there is no good substitute, and do not want to see its technical meaning lost.

She spent an afternoon digging through boxes and documenting interesting comments that the Panelists had written on their ballots. The American Heritage Dictionary Usage Panel, by Susan Steinway

We all know (and love) the American Heritage Dictionary. We know about its pioneering use of both prescriptive and descriptive information on word usage, as well the panel of experts on usage, but have you ever really thought about all the work involved in gathering all of that together?

A few months ago Senior Editor of Trade and Reference, Louise Robbins, offered me the opportunity to look over some of the usage questionnaires from the mid-1960s before they were sent off to storage. It was bracing to spend a couple of hours with such an opinionated and often cranky group. 

For example, here is historian Barbara Tuchman on the use of “author” as a verb:  

But for the most part, the panelists were a little bit more diplomatic in their comments.  Here’s Isaac Asimov on the same question:

  And, of course, they were occasionally funny.  Here’s American Heritage magazine editor Oliver Jensen on the word “trek:”

And writer Russell Baker on splitting infinitives with a sideswipe at corporate jargon:

The panelists were often aware of their own imperfections, as well as the pitfalls of being an expert.  That’s probably what makes them so useful to HMH and the dictionary, and why the American Heritage dictionary is so useful to everyone.  Here’s author and critic Malcolm Cowley’s final comment on his questionnaire:

Finally, a personal note: as sometimes happens when you are delving into recent archives you encounter something quite familiar, or in my case something family. I had forgotten that my uncle, William Zinsser, was on the panel.  He is the only remaining member of the original panel still serving on it.  Suddenly, I was looking at comments written in familiar handwriting and sounding so like him, both amusing and thoughtful, along with a touch of the teacher.  Here he is on the word “zoom”:

When I visited Uncle Bill over the holidays and I mentioned reading his questionnaires, he said he didn’t remember writing so many comments on them, and went on to speak of how much he loves being on the panel and fighting the good fight for proper usage while allowing the language to evolve.

A "dilemma" is a situation that requires a choice between two alternative courses of action, often mutually exclusive.  It is not the same as "problem."
