So if she (ie: the wife) is from a household where the women are served and do not serve, then he (ie: the husband) should provide her with a servant, if able. But if it is the custom among them that she serves her husband and takes care of the household needs—such as cooking and the like—then it is upon her to carry that out. فإذا كانت من بيت يُخْدَم نساؤه، ولا يَخْدِمُون، أخدمها مع القدرة، وإذا كانت في عرفهم أنها تَخْدِم زوجها وتقوم بحاجة البيت، من الطبخ وغيره، فعليها أن تقوم بذلك، The wives of the Prophet ﷺ used to serve in the house; they used to serve the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in his home, presenting him with food and attending to his needs, and they were the most honorable of women—may Allah be pleased with them and grant them His good pleasure. وكانت أزواج النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم يخدمن في البيت، يخدمن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم في بيته، يقدمن له الطعام والحاجات، وهن أشرف النساء رضي الله عنهن، وأرضاهن، Thus, it is obligatory upon the woman to fulfill what is obligatory, to serve him in his house, and to provide him with what is customary of food, drink, clothing, and other such matters—unless it has been established and is known in the land that someone of her status does not serve, but rather is served when it comes to matters such as cooking and the like. In that case, he must bring her a servant, if he is able. فالواجب على المرأة أن تقوم بالواجب، وأن تخدمه في بيته، وأن تقدم له المعتاد من طعام، وشراب، ولباس وغير ذلك، إلا إذا كان قد استقر في البلد، وعرف في البلد، أن مثلها لا يَخْدِم، وإنما يُخْدَم فيما يتعلق بالطبخ، ونحوه، فإنه يأتي لها بخادم، إذا استطاع ذلك. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. ʿAbd Allah b.
