Today we started our first SKLAS conference for the year. A group of clergy and lay leaders from across the Western Cape gathered to reflect on the theme: “The Church and the 'new normal' after Covid-19.“ The Chair of the SKLAS committee, Rev Glenda Fredricks and the Moderator of the Synod, Rev Dr Llewellyn Macmaster lit a candle and prayed in memory of the Church members and Ministers who passed away since we last met before the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. Each participant received a copy of the new book, “Covid-19 in Congregations and Communities: An exploration of the influence of the Coronavirus Pandemic on congregational and community life’, (edited by Prof Ian Nell). Rev Babalwa Sifuba is leading the Contextual Bible Study on our topic, and our other speakers are Rev Dawid Mouton and Prof Cas Wepener. Today we are hosting an online conference for clergy, church leaders and academics in the Eastern Cape. We are focusing on the Church and human sexuality. Our presenters are Dr Ntozake Cezula, Prof Charlene van der Walt, and Rev Hanzeline Davids. Our moderator is Dr Sipho Mahokoto. These conferences normally take place around the country and are a partnership between the SKLAS of the URCSA, Kerk in Aksie (in the Netherlands) and the Beyers Naudé Centre for Public Theology. It has been a wonderfully rich day so far.
