Eddie knew the details of the break in. He read the reports and he knew all the clinical pieces of information that made a timeline of the events. But hearing Buck’s side was like staring at an ugly, unhealed scar that was still pink on your chest. Where the initial trauma was gone but the aftermath was so much worse than the initial impact.

Another flash of lightning lingered enough for Eddie to catch a glimpse of a tear as it fell down the slope of Buck’s nose and onto the pillow. It took everything in him not to reach out and brush it away for him.

Bobby turned in his seat to look up at the stage where Red always had someone playing something (usually an old buddy that liked to jam out on the weekend). Up beneath a weak bar light in a dirty t-shirt and a worn baseball cap flipped backwards over blond curls was a kid who couldn’t be older than twenty-three. Maybe twenty-four? A pink birthmark dotted his brow. Unique like his sound.

“My bus boy,” Red said when Bobby asked. “Buck. He’s a good kid. An idiot but a good one.”
