Coins with holes are the most fascinating I think, and there are many reasons why old coins have been designed with holes in them. Romans and Greeks apparently used to thread them to wear as decorative necklaces. Others people used to sew them into garments so they couldn't be stolen. It's also easy to thread the coins onto string for storage. The Chinese had a preference for square holes in their coins because it benefitted their style of production and they're easier to string if the hole is square. I've used this Danish coin from 1934 with a hole as a toggle for a salvaged bead bracelet. All the beads are from broken jewelry, except two pottery ones in green glaze that I have hand made myself. The bracelet is finally decorated with a labradorite cabachon dangle that I have given a decorated band in sterling silver.
