“Tank Man” temporarily stops the advance of a column of tanks on June 5, 1989, in Beijing. This photograph (one of four similar versions) was taken by Jeff Widener of the Associated Press.

CHINESE PROTESTER Â
In 1989, thousands of Chinese students marched through Beijing protesting against the power hungry government. They met in Tiananmen Square and many went on a hunger strike. The government sent soldiers who killed many of the protesters.
A man dressed in white and black who was carrying two shopping bags stood in front of one of the tanks that was at the front of 58 tanks. When the tank attempted to go around him, he stepped to the side and blocked its path. The tank turned off its engine. Two men in blue took the man away; no one knew who he was or his fate. His courage was captured on video and was shared all over the world.

Tank Man, or the Unknown Protester, is the nickname of an anonymous man who stood in front of a column of tanks on June 5, 1989, the morning after the Chinese military had suppressed the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989 by force.Â
The first photograph, taken by Charlie Cole, was given the prestigues World Press Photo of the Year award.
In April 1998, Time included the "Tank Man" in a feature titled Time 100: The Most Important People of the Century.
