Drawing influence from the broiling hatred of the Japanese punk scene, the head-clawing aural discomfort of Dwid Hellion's Psywarfare and upholding the general Holy Terror ethos that humanity is indeed the devil, even on paper Unit Tōgō are a fearsome prospect. And they do not fuck about. The fact that they're named after a secret, biological division of the Japanese army who, during World War 2, carried out abhorrent medical experiments on prisoners should clue you in further that these dudes are serious biznass. Adding to all that, Unit Tōgō boast a high calibre lineup pulled from the underground and spanning the globe – Axel from Puerto Rican aggressors Martyr's Tongue takes on guitar and vocals – his riffs a buzzsaw and his voice a crackling husk of hatred – with Jonas from Norway's Heksed on drums while Hunter from mysterious power-electronic torturers Malware brings the digital noise. It's a formidable setup, and one that Unit Tōgō deliver on. It may be only 3 tracks long, but this 2014 Demo covers a hell of a lot of ground, knocking you senseless as it drags you through the nightmare soundscape of 'Nuclear Cleansing' and onto the blistering punk blitzkrieg of 'ABC Warfare' before finally dumping you in a wasteland of sonic desolation with 'Rivers Of Blood'. This final track echoes especially of Axel's work with Martyr's Tongue, who were always keen to abruptly slam on the brakes and treat you to an interlude of ominous shimmering electronics and haggard, wretched vocals. There are traces of all the members work here, little bits of their DNA dashed throughout the biology of Unit Tōgō and meshing together to create the perfect storm.
