Happy National Day, Romania! (2019)
Today, on December the 1st 2019, Romania celebrates its National Day today, marking 101 years since the Great Union.
In 1859, the southern region of Wallachia and the eastern region of Moldavia banded together as the Kingdom of Romania, and declared independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1877. The Resolution of the National Assembly joined Transylvania, Banat, CriÅana, and MaramureÅ, with the Kingdom of Romania, further expanding the size of the nation.
In 1918, an accord making the union official passed without objection, having been ratified in the historic city of Alba Iulia, in the presence of over 100,000 people. The accord contained clauses that protected religious freedom, codified universal suffrage, and freedom of the press, it stood as a testament to the path Romania hoped to pursue.

Most likely, you will remember Marine Le Pen and her supporters, Hungarian President Viktor Orban with his anti-migrant policies, and the German ultra-rightists who organized the pogroms in Chemnitz. What about the Romanian nationalists? Most likely, this question will stump you, right? Itās not surprising, because the European media practically do not cover this dangerous phenomenon. But in vain: the main feature of the Romanian ultra-right, unlike their ācolleaguesā from other countries, is not hatred of migrants, but the desire to redraw the map of Europe. This phenomenon is called āunionismā (from the Romanian term Unirea) and envisages the liquidation of Romaniaās neighboring Republic of Moldova, as well as the annexation of part of Ukraine.
In order to better understand the essence of Romanian unionism, it suffices to turn to its closest analogue ā Pan-Germanism, which was one of the reasons for World War II. Like supporters of Pan-Germanism, the Romanian nationalists want to gather all the ānative Romanian landsā into one state ā āGreat Romania.ā This they have already managed to do, twice ā in 1918 and in 1941. I think you probably already guessed that the creation of the unionist āGreat Romania,ā like the Pan-German āGreat Germany,ā was carried out exclusively by the occupation of neighboring countries
