applied for 1 job today. can i be done
I'm finding What Color Is Your Parachute's optimism depressing, like they really think you can get a job like this??? In what job market??
you realize many fucked up things in unemployment, like how work is the only common measure of human worth in this fucking country and how it's viewed as a personal shame when you cannot find anything specialized regardless of like, the fact that all the power rests in the hands of the hiring authorities and there is absolutely nothing any one individual can do about it, and that having no work to do makes you realize exactly how much time 8 hours/day 5 days/week is and how little time there is to live life outside of it, and all of it is not for any real growth of personal wealth but serves instead to line to the pockets of the corporate elite who have built infallible empires on top of the backs of workers who had no choice but to break their bodies and waste their one precious life on this mortal coil in service of nothing so much as a line that must always go up, and never ever come down, a god made solely of numbers to worship day in and day out, and the problems of this unknowable leviathan are somehow construed to be the personal failings of the workers, and if they do not worship at the altar of greed they instead suffer a life of squalor and shame created in part by their peers, a perpetual cycle, a mountain you must climb and know you will never ascend to the peak
but primarily. you really learn how bad job application websites are, and that you always have to make an account. why can i never use my browser's back button. i don't want to make an account. please just let me send you a pdf.
got back from the beach today and glanced at the calendar and realized it's the one year anniversary of quitting my job. well!! happy birthday to me!
what i have learned since then:
it is remarkable how long our lives are, and remarkable how much of that life we are expected to spend in order to line rich people's pockets. and then be grateful to have the opportunity to do so
many companies you respect won't even send you a rejection to a job application until several months after the position has already been filled
many companies require you to send in a video application even for a job that does not involve making videos at all. this is vile.
i didn't even have fun. a year of having no expectations of me beyond what i was already doing and i didn't even remember to have fun until the last few weeks here
i would literally find myself thinking things like "but i'm not working, i don't deserve to listen to music right now" and just haven't been listening to music for months. why??? i don't know!!!
sunday night ennui is somehow worse when you know there's nothing you have to do the next day
even if you give me all the time in the world i will still not watch the tv show you recommended me. sorry.
dentistry is expensive without insurance. BUT worry not: even when i had insurance, my deductible still wouldn't have covered what i paid out of pocket to get my mouth fixed this year <3
but most importantly: everything is broken! it really is! but there is always hope at the end of the day, it sometimes does not feel like it at all. but it's there. it's just probably not in the time or place you want it to be.
