This week’s class topic was entitled Undoing Gender. The lecture slides described this concept as for how gender is a performance. It exists because we are enacting it. Hence, there is no key relationship between a certain body and a certain gender.
Undoing gender is a term coined by Judith Butler and she essentially describes this meaning by stating that gender is performative. Butler once quoted; “How can there be a performance without a performer, an act without an actor?” (Salih, 2007). My clear understanding of this quote would be the performer is the individual and the act is the gender, also the script of this act would be the stereotypical roles associated with the identified gender.
